Course Description

Sequel to MAT 015. Flexible course covering additional topics in intermediate algebra and geometry beyond those that are covered in the basic remedial MAT 011-014 sequence. Aimed at preparing students for more technical university level math and science courses (e.g. precalculus).

MAT 016 meets for three hours per week for five weeks. It is a pre-collegiate course. It is graded on a CR/NC basis and does not count toward the Bachelor's degree.

Prerequisites

To enroll in MAT 016 students must show they have credit in MAT 014 and MAT 015 or equivalent.

Textbook

Required

ALEKS computer-based algebra review software.

Recommended

Intermediate Algebra (6th ed.) by Johnston, Willis, Lazaris, published by PWS Publishing Company. Bundled with WebAssign online supplement. ISBN #0495287741.

Objectives

After completing MAT 016 the student should be able to solve more technical problems in intermediate algebra and geometry beyond the topics covered in MAT 011-015. Such topics may include completing the square, quadratic inequalities, rotation of coordinates, sequences and series, conic sections, etc.

It is expected that their skills in these areas will increase to a level beyond what they achieved in MAT 015.

Expected outcomes

Students will strengthen their skills in mathematics and skills in working with others through their participation in tutoring.

Method of Evaluating Outcomes

Evaluations will be based on progress reports produced by tutorial software (ALEKS) and the results of a final exam.

Grading

MAT 016 is a CR/NC class. To earn credit students must spend at least 15 hours actively working on tutorial software or participating in equivalent tutoring, and pass a proficiency exam.

Exam Dates

TBA

Make-up Exams

There are no make-up exams.

Attendance Requirements

Students are required to spend a minimum of 3 hours per week in a supervised area actively working with the ALEKs software.
