MAT 171 Survey of Calculus

Course Description: Functions, linear equations, the derivative and its applications, the integral and its applications, and partial derivatives.

Prerequisite:Fulfillment of ELM requirement. Students who have credit in MAT 191 (Calculus I) or its equivalent, or who have credit in a course for which Calculus I is a prerequisite, will not receive credit for MAT 171.

Textbook: Essential Calculus with Applications, Richard A. Silverman, Dover, 0-486-66097-4

LSAMP Tutorial for 191/171 EAC 501, Tu 11:20--12:50, Th 11:20--12:50, 17:30--20:30. Tutors: Mark Lohmann, Raul Escobar.

Calculator:

• Symbolic calculators, such as TI-89 or TI-92 are not acceptable for this course. As for instruction I will use a TI-84 plus.
• Here is a java base graphing calculator. You can also visit its offical website

Assignment: Exercises will be assigned via Webwork. They are an integral part of the course.
