Cultural
and Education Programs
The MCC promotes the exploration of diverse heritages, values and cultural
experiences by offering a wide range of co-curricular activities and programs
throughout the academic year. Some of these include: a 32-day multicultural
festival, dramatic presentations, lectures, concerts, art exhibits, movies,
symposia, dance lessons and poetry festivals. For more information, please
contact the MCC for a calendar of events.Co-sponsorship
of cultural activities
The
MCC provides staff support and monetary donations to student groups and
campus departments for cultural programs that further the mission and
goals of the MCC. Programs that have been co-sponsored by the MCC include
the annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration, Cinco de Mayo, Lunar New Year
Celebration, Black History Month, Asian Pacific Heritage Month, Las Posadas,
and the American Indian Music Symposium.
Diversity
Chats
An
ongoing program of the multicultural center, Diversity Chats are a series
of discussions exploring issues surrounding diversity and multiculturalism.
In a comfortable setting of 20 to 30 people, a facilitator leads an interactive
dialogue that encourages participation from all attendees. Past diversity
Chats have been focused on the following themes: "What is multiculturalism?",
"Inter-racial Dating: Stuck between two worlds?", "Racism
101: The Basics", and "Confronting Heterosexism."
Cross
Cultural Retreat
Workshops,
fun, diversity, dialogue, outdoors, and new friends await you at the annual
Cross Cultural Retreat! Held each year in the spring, the Cross Cultural
Retreat is a weekend, residential program that provides students, faculty
and staff interactive activities and thought-provoking discussions about
cross cultural issues while striving towards building a more understanding
and open community. The Cross Cultural Retreat provides an opportunity
for honest dialogue about issues related to diversity and how to build
effective multicultural alliances across cultures.
Student
Leadership Opportunities
The
Multicultural Center offers numerous opportunities for student leadership
and volunteerism. Internship positions are available for MCC Publicity/Promotions
Assistant, Webmaster/Graphic Artist, Special Events Assistants, Cultural
and Educational Resources Coordinators, Publication Editors and Research
Assistants. Student positions on the MCC Advisory Board are also available.
Since student volunteerism is critical to the success of the Multicultural
Center, the MCC recruits volunteers year-round, for nearly every event
and program.
