Male Success Alliance

The mission of MSA is to improve access, retention and graduation
rates of boys and men of color by providing academic support, professional
development and mentoring. The program aims to support the college and
career success of boys and men of color by utilizing a holistic approach
to promote brotherhood and community through cultural
awareness and identity development.

CSUDH MSA Holistic Development

The Male Success Alliance is composed of two subprograms:

Male Success Alliance Middle School

The Middle and High School Program

Focused on college preparation and targeted to some of the most challenging and underserved neighborhoods of Los Angeles County, including Compton, Carson, Torrance, South Los Angeles, and Long Beach.

Male Success Alliance High School

The Campus Program

Focused on retention and graduation. We are requesting support from the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation to support the Campus Program, and the description below is specific to that program. In an effort to improve college access and success for boys and men of color, the Male Success Alliance partners with local middle schools and high schools to mentor approximately 250 students in the community. Each year MSA hires college members to work at local middle schools and high schools to provide additional support for men of color during the instructional day. Throughout the year, MSA hosts a variety of programs and services designed to equip men with the tools necessary for postsecondary success. These include workshops, study halls, leadership development retreats, civic engagement opportunities, college visits and cultural field trips. The objective is to create a positive, achievement-based environment that supports and encourages young Men of Color to succeed and persist in higher education.

MSA currently partners with the following schools to mentor students:

1. Locke High School
2. Alliance Pati & Peter Neuwirth Leadership Academy
3. Los Angeles Academy Middle School
4. Lifeline Charter School
5. Environmental Charter Middle School
6. Hawthorne High School
7. Leuzinger High School
8. Magnolia Science Academy 3

Our Impact

The Male Success Alliance was established in 2009 with a small but significant group of seven outstanding students. Since that time, with tremendous support from CSUDH administration, MSA has grown tremendously and made a significant impact. In fact, the Male Success Alliance boasts a combined 90% retention and graduation rate.
