INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING ONLINE/TELEVISED COURSES
Welcome to California State University, Dominguez Hills!
This is to confirm that you have been registered for your courses.
Blackboard Course Websites:
Every Behavioral Science distance learning course at Cal State
Dominguez Hills uses a Blackboard website for communication and
part of the instruction. Every student who is enrolled in a Behavioral
Science distance learning course will have a portal with links
to each of their course websites.
To access your portal, please go to <http://toro.csudh.edu>
and follow the directions.
It will take 48 hours after you register and pay your fees for
the
Blackboard System to update your status; web access is not immediate.
When you go to your portal, click on the tab that says Courses.
Internet Broadcast Information:
Behavioral Science distance learning courses are also broadcast
live on television in southern California and the Internet. Internet
viewers will need a computer (PC or Mac), Pentium II (233 MHZ),
at least 32 MB RAM, Windows 98 or 2000, and a 56k modem. It is
important you test your ability to view the Internet broadcasts
before your first class.
Go to http://dominguezonline.csudh.edu
and click on the word
Demonstration in the left menu. Follow the directions for downloading
the Shockwave and if necessary, Windows Media Player. If you have
a Mac be sure to download Media Player for Macintosh. If you are
able to see and hear the demonstration, return to the website
and click on Broadcast Schedule. Find a class that is meeting
at a time convenient to you and log on during the broadcast.
Some
people have problems viewing the broadcast on the Internet. There
are a number of reasons why this could happen.
1. Some Internet Service Providers (AOL in particular) will disconnect
you from the Internet after a period of time (roughly 45 minutes).
There is usually a warning that pops on the screen before you
are is connected. You should look for that warning and click on
the "do not disconnect" button.
2.
If you are in a rural area your phone line may be old and
inadequate. The best connection for viewing Internet broadcasts
is DSL or a cable modem. If those options are not available, you
should consider getting a second phone line and a dual line modem
or DirectPC - satellite Internet service.
3.
Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) server may be inadequate.
Some people have solved their problems by changing to another
ISP. (An ISP that is good in one area may be weak in another -
ask your neighbors which ISP provides the best service.)
4.
You may have so many programs on your computer that there is not
enough memory left to support the broadcast (consider removing
some of the games and memory-hungry applications or purchasing
more memory).
5. You need more RAM (Media Player will run with 32 MGs of RAM,
but it will run much better with 64 or 128 MGs of RAM).
