Points of Pride

The University made great strides during the fiscal year 2007/08. Below are some of our “points of pride” and highlights of recent accomplishments:
- University’s accreditation reaffirmed by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC); awarded highest possible evaluation with 10-year reaccreditation to 2018.
- The newly remodeled Loker Student Union hosted over 1,850 events during FY 2007/08, quickly returning to its role as the central gathering place on campus.
- French American Cultural Exchange (FACE) Tournées Festival of French Films held at CSU Dominguez Hills in 2008.
- University hosted the Guitar Foundation of America Annual Convention and Competition in 2007.
- The Inauguration of Dr. Mildred García as the seventh president of California State University, Dominguez Hills was held on Friday, May 2, 2008. University faculty, staff, students, alumni, state officials, community members, and academic leaders from other institutions came from all over the nation to celebrate the installation of the new president.
- Student Development held fifth annual “Latinas Juntas” program in 2008 and developed the new program, “Pizza, Profs and Platicas,” for Latino/a students to meet faculty and find mentors.
- Chelsea Clinton: Your Voice, Your Future Tour held on campus in 2008 to encourage students to vote in the California primary elections.
- State Budget Town Hall with Speaker Karen Bass and Assemblyman Warren Furutani was held on campus in 2008.
- Noted Chicano/a authors Sandra Cisneros and Luis Rodriguez spoke on campus in 2007.
- $51 million Library expansion broke ground in 2007; expected to be completed in 2009.
- University was ranked among top 100 universities in the country to confer undergraduate and graduate degrees on minority students by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, in its 2008 rankings.
- University recognized as a trendsetting Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in 2008 by Excelencia in Education.
- National Survey for Student Engagement (NSSE) and USA Today published results in 2007: CSU Dominguez Hills Offers Engaging Environment for Students.
- President García was selected as the Grand Marshal of the 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade.
- CSU Dominguez Hills art students designed six University Class Schedule covers for 2008/09 and 2009/10.
- CSU Dominguez Hills named Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Training Institute Education Center in 2008.
- Faculty in the College of Education collaborated in development of New Millennium Secondary School, a charter school emphasizing technology-enhanced learning; opening fall 2008 in Carson with 150+ ninth graders.
- University began publishing online campus-wide Directory of Awards, Scholarly Works, and Creative Activities featuring faculty and staff accomplishments in 2008.
- During FY 2007/08, U.S. Department of Education awarded CSU Dominguez Hills $1.1 million for McNair Scholars Program, the University Library received $98,000 grant from National Archives to complete the Early Los Angeles Rancho San Pedro Cataloging Project, a $50,000 grant was given to CSU Dominguez Hills from the Rosalind and Arthur Gilbert Foundation in support of the Toro Summer Bridge program, and the Greg Smith Memorial Garden dedication was held in February 2008, funded with over $100,000 in donations.
