University Partnership with PICTURE Cultural Art -- OLLI TOUR
The PICTURE Cultural Art space in the University Library South Wing Addition provides students, faculty and the community with a rich multicultural experience through the arts. The establishment of the PICTURE Cultural Art space is the result of a unique public/private partnership between CSU Dominguez Hills and the PICTURE Art Foundation and was allocated for cultural and artistic purposes to benefit the university and surrounding community.

Exhibitions at PICTURE Cultural Art illustrate how the different cultures of Southern California approach common themes in our lives as conveyed through their fine arts. The multicultural exhibitions support the university’s role as an educational and cultural center where diversity in all its forms is explored, understood, and transformed into knowledge and practice through curricula and research.

We look forward to having you enjoy a talk on the origins and future plans for the PICTURE Cultural Art space along with a guided tour of the current exhibit. There will be photo opportunities so don’t forget your cameras!

The PICTURE Cultural Art space is located on the ground floor of the
Library South Wing. Participants will meet on the steps outside the ground floor entrance beside the wonderful sculpture, “Where Cultures Meet” by Benjamin Victor. It is suggested that participants park in Lot 6 near LaCorte Hall.

Juneteenth Celebration
In an ongoing effort to explore the culture, practices and contributions of
African Americans in the South Bay, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
(OLLI) will hold its first Juneteenth Celebration. Juneteenth:Emancipation
Day! celebrates the liberation of black American slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. This marks the event in Galveston, Texas when the Union General Gordon Granger read a special order from President Abraham Lincoln known as the Emancipation Proclamation which was signed on January 1, 1863 (two and one half years earlier and two months after the end of the Civil War). Instantly, June 19, or Juneteenth for short, became a day of celebration and family reunions in Texas.

Join us on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 and learn more about this celebration that has spread across America. There will be more on the history and evolution of this day as commemoration of African-American freedom as well as traditional food and drink associated with this celebration. We invite you to share your Juneteenth experiences!

Car Fit Event
What is CarFit? CarFit is an educational program created by The American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with AAA (American Automobile Association), and the American Occupational Therapy Association. The purpose of this event is to promote conversations about driver safety and community mobility.

The program is designed to help older drivers find out how well they
currently fit their personal vehicles, and to highlight actions they can take to improve their fit. A proper fit in one’s personal vehicle can greatly increase not only the driver’s safety but also the safety of others.

Friday, June 22, 2012, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at CSUDH Parking lot 4 (off
University Drive).
This event is free to OLLI members, who must register by June 13. Only
registered OLLI members will be contacted to schedule appointments.

Facilitator: Eula Slater OLLI Member.
