What is CarFit?

CarFit is an educational program created by the American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with AAA (American Automobile Association) and the American Occupational Therapy Association. The purpose of this event is to promote driver safety.

The program is designed to help older drivers find out how well they currently fit their personal vehicles and to highlight actions they can take to improve their fit. A proper fit in one's personal vehicle can greatly increase not only driver safety but also the safety of others.

Friday, June 13
9 am - 12 noon
at CSUDH parking lot 4 (off University Drive)
The event is free to OLLI members, who must register by June 7. Only registered OLLI members will be contacted to schedule appointments. Each member must bring his/her own car.

Juneteenth Celebration

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will hold its third Juneteenth Celebration, Juneteenth Emancipation Day! In an ongoing effort to explore the culture, practices, and contributions of African Americans in the South Bay, OLLI celebrates the liberation of black American slaves in the state of Texas on June 19, 1865. This celebrates the event in Galveston, Texas, where Union General Gordon Granger read a special order from President Abraham Lincoln known as the Emancipation Proclamation, signed on January 1, 1863 (two and one-half years earlier, and two months after the end of the Civil War). Instantly, June 19, or Juneteenth for short, became a day of celebration and family reunion in Texas.

Join us and learn more about the history and evolution of this day of commemoration of African-American freedom, which is now observed across America. Traditional refreshments associated with this celebration will be served. We invite you to share your Juneteenth experiences.

Facilitators: OLLI Ambassadors and a host of other OLLI members and friends.
