Natural Processes and Human Welfare (SMT 312)
This class will focus on natural disasters on planet Earth, to include discussion of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, climate change, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, coastal processes, asteroid impacts, and fires. Approximately one-third of the course will offered on-line via Blackboard, focusing on recent, world-wide catastrophic disasters (Pakistan earthquake, Asian earthquake and tsumani, Hurricane Katrina).

3 sections are available, includiing a hybrid on campus/online course. The schedule for SMT 312 can be found on page 67 of the Open University Schedule.

Security Engineering (CSC 495)
Course goals and objectives:
The goal of the course is to provide introduction to the design, implementation and management of systems that remain dependable in the face of malice, error or mischance. Topics include the tools, processes and methods needed to design, implement and test complete systems, and to adapt existing systems as their environment evolves. Specifically it includes cryptography, privacy, hardware tamper-resistance, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, and security policis.
Learning outcomes:
Succesfull students will be able to implement security measures in their working environments: - remove spyware from desktops and servers,
- install host-based firewalls,
- identify company's security treats
- design security policy and its enforcement.
