Asucena Cervantes, former APA scholar
My name is Asucena I. Cervantes, and I am an alumnus from CSUDH, class of 2000. I am currently attending Claremont Graduate University, working on my Masters in Psychology with a co-concentration in Evaluation and in Organizational Behavior. I currently work for the CGU research offices, and am working on three other research projects. I plan to graduate in the Spring of 2002, and continue to Cal State LA or Dominguez Hills to get my counseling credentials, which should take another year. There are plans for a Ph.D, but that will come later in life.
Kistyn Gritney, former APA scholar
I am currently a senior at Cal State Dominguez Hills majoring in psychology. While attending the university I have developed a keen interest in psychology and have decided to continue my education at graduate school.   All of the faculty, staff, and students at Dominguez Hills, and especially in the department of psychology, have been extremely supportive of my educational goals and have been great to work with. I am involved in a number of programs on campus and all of them have helped me to grow in very important ways. The APA/NIGMS scholars program especially, has given me excellent guidance, support, and information. The program has allowed me to fine tune my goals and decide how I want to utilize the education that I’ve received at Dominguez Hills. It is a program that I recommend very highly for any minority student interested in pursuing a graduate education. This fall I plan to begin studying social psychology and evaluation at Claremont Graduate University. My goal is to earn my Ph.D. in social psychology. I believe that Dominguez Hills has given me a very good foundation for my future educational endeavors. It is a very comfortable place to learn.
Angel Holliday, former APA scholar
As my undergraduate education nears it end, I look in retrospect over the years.  In the fall of 1995, I began my quest towards success with the idea of eventually becoming a pediatrician.  I soon realized that I wanted to help people but not in the medical field but in education.  This change in career plan was inspired by my counseling aide position at Santa Monica College. I was hired as a counselor's aid in the Black Collegian Center on campus.  I assisted fellow students with educational plans.  I also offer student-to-student advice on what courses and professors to take.  I held this position for two years.  I loved it!  It was at that point that I decided to change my career path.
I am an energetic mother, student and member of my community.  I have a beautiful three year old son.  I was the president of the Psychology Club (fall 2000).  I made the Dean's List for spring 2001 (3.86 gpa).  I am a member of the APA/NIGMS Scholars Program at CSU Dominguez Hills.  I was the recipient of the Student Recognition Award, present of the EOPS Club, and a member of the Black Collegian Program at Santa Monica College.  I remained on the Dean's Honor List for two consecutive semesters at SMC. I coordinated the JAMS (John Adams Middle School) Tutorial Program for three years.  I received an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts from Santa Monica College.  I received the Mayor's Certificate of Recognition for representing the United States as a Youth Ambassador in Japan.
With God's help, I will graduate in May 2002 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Psychology.  Immediately following, I will enter the masters in education program at CSUDH.  There, I will obtain a Master of Arts Degree in Education with a focus in counseling.  I want to do academic counseling at a community college while working on my doctorate degree.  I will then attain a Ph.D in counseling psychology.
With God's help, I will succeed.
Juan Madera, former APA scholar
I have been working on a research project with Dr.Gray-Shellberg for about a year.  The title is "The Influence of Victim's Attire, Participant's Gender, and Knowing a Rape Victim on Blame Attribution."   I have presented this at the CSUDH research conference and at the CSU research competition at San Jose State University (April 27th).  I am also going to present this at WPA at Maui (May 6th) and at the UCLA research conference (May 11th). Although my research has been in social psychology, my interest is in I/O psychology. My minor is marketing and management. My future plans and goals: Graduate next spring with honors, getting into an I/O Ph.D. program, completing the program successfully, and work as a consultant and as a university professor.

Alejandro Morales, former APA scholar
I am senior at CSUDH, and I will be graduating in Spring 2002.  My research interest is in Minority Mental Health, especially among Latinos.  My plans are to obtain a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology and work as a researcher and professor.  I have been member of the APA/NIGMS Program for 2 1/2 years.  I have worked with Dr. L. Mark Carrier on a project on confidence levels regarding knowledge about HIV/AIDS, people's self-perceived risk, and sexual behavior.  Also, I have worked with Dr. Silvia Santos on a project that looks at Ethnic Identity, Interethnic Relations and College Adjustment at Multicultural Campuses.  At this point I am working on my Senior Thesis Project.  I have attended various conferences for example, (1) 1999 Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (2) 2000 National Conference of the American Association of Higher Education (3) 2000 Western Psychological Association Convention, and (4) 2000 Annual Conference on Behavior Clinical Neuroscience, Substance Abuse and Culture.  I also had the privilege of participating in the Summer Research Opportunity Program at the University of Utah where I worked with Dr. Tim Smith and worked on the project entitled, "Differentiating Between Hostility and Depression in Interpersonal Stress."

Danusia Nedilskyj, former APA scholar
I am currently a junior, and will hopefully be receiving my bachelor's degree next spring. I was intitially a biology major, but decided to give psychology a try my sophomore year and keep biology as my minor. I am interested in the field of clinical psychology, although I am currently doing research with Dr. Ortiz who is a developmental psychologist. Being a first time member of the APA/ NIGMS program, I have only completed the literature review. We are studying the influences of Hispanic mothers on their child's academic acheivement and are anticipating having a study ready for next semester. Furthermore, I became a member of Psi Chi this semester. After receiving my bachelor's degree next spring, I hope to go to graduate school, but still cannot decide which universities to apply to. I am excited about being a part of the APA/NIGMS program and am looking forward to my last year at CSUDH.
Monica Rosales, former APA scholar
I am a senior at CSU, Dominguez Hills and I plan on graduating next spring.  My interest is Health Psychology and my goal is to obtain a PhD in that field.  I have been a member of the APA/NIGMS program for 1½ years.  I have been working on a project with Dr. Silvia Santos that looks at ethnic identity, interethnic relations and college adjustment on multicultural campuses.  I am also working with Dr. L. Mark Carrier on a project that will examine the memorability of printed health education materials. I attended the National Conference of the American Association of Higher Education (2000) and I will be attending the 109th Annual APA Convention in August.  I am proud to say that I am the secretary for Psi Chi and the Psychology Club.  Last summer I had the opportunity to participate in the Summer Research Opportunity Program at the University of Utah.  There I worked with Dr. Tim Smith and John Ruiz on a project titled, “Walking on Egg shells: Interpersonal Correlates of Rejection Sensitivity.”  I feel very fortunate to be a member of this program because it has helped me develop many of my research skills, it has helped me to obtain a clearer understanding of what graduate school is and it has opened the door to many opportunities I otherwise wouldn’t have had.  I want to thank all of the professors who are involved in this program.  Thank you very much for taking the time to help us and guide us because with out your guidance and support it would be difficult.
Kimberly Usher, former APA scholar
My introduction to the field of psychology was purely coincidental. While attending junior college two years ago, I needed to fill a vacant slot in my semester schedule. The psych 101 class being offered fit perfectly so I registered for it. Three weeks into the class, I was hooked. Since then, I have developed an eager interest and overall passion for the field. I am currently a senior at CSUDH. I will be graduating with my BA next spring. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, I hope to be accepted to a Ph.D. program at a university. While all areas of psychology are intriguing, I am especially interested in clinical psychology and current research in Childhood Psychopathology. It is my goal to someday establish a center that will provide treatment for children suffering from psychological disorders and counseling for their families. Since I have been a member of the APA/ NIGMS program for only a few months, my involvement in research is minimal. My faculty mentor is Dr. L. Mark Carrier whose area of study is Cognitive Psychology. Together, we are working on a project entitled, "The Relationship Between Knowledge of Heart Disease Risk Factors and Heart Health Behavior." Though the project is still in its embryonic stage, we hope to present in the coming year. Although I have not been personally involved in presenting research, I have been privileged to share the research accomplishments of my fellow scholars. This summer I hope to begin my own trail down the research path as I attend a summer research program at Oklahoma State University. There, I will be working with Dr. Melanie Page who studies the social and emotional development of young children.
