European Classical Dance Performance
Introduction of Dance Program:

Assistant Professor of Dance
Dance Coordinator
European classical dance features two dance genres, ballet and ballroom dance. These dance forms grew up side-by-side dating back to the Middle Ages. Folk dance steps influenced European royal courts. Dancing masters would refine the rowdy, robust folk dances of the peasants to create elegant dances more suited to the royal image. Court dances paved the way for Ballet as seen in this short excerpt of Paquita. It was the first work ever staged by Russian choreographer Marius Petipa in 1847 for the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg. Prior to the waltz social dances were communal because all the dancers on the floor took part in a pre-set pattern. With the waltz, couples were independent of each other and the man and the woman were turned towards each other creating a most risqué dance for the times.
