Astronomy helps answer questions about the "how" in the universe so we as intelligent beings can philosophize about the "why" of the universe. I enjoy the opportunity to talk about the wonders and sheer beauty of nature's simplistic complexity. I organize and present general public observing sessions so as many people as possible can enjoy the night sky.
The quality of science education is a major concern in today's K-12 schools. I help train teachers to utilize science principles and technology in an integrated approach to education. Astronomy is particularly well suited for this task because you can incorporate history, language, writing, math, technology and science into its presentation.
I love the mountains! I enjoy the wilderness, especially our National Parks and forests. Yosemite Park is my all time favorite place. Hiking away from the road takes you into a different time and environment where one can appreciate the beauty and solitude of nature in all its glory, not to mention the clear, dark skies at night. One is rejuvenated during these experiences.
Unfortunately our wilderness areas are being attacked by pollution, development and an ever increasing disregard for species and habitat. While I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to behold these spectacular areas; I firmly believe that a balance must be attained between the lust for profit and our responsibility to protect these special places on spaceship Earth for all future generations to enjoy!
