Ongoing Needs

Support is needed on an ongoing basis for the University’s major academic units and for student scholarships. Each of the University’s four schools, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Public Administration, the School of Education, and the School of Health have a plethora of projects and programs in need of support. Please refer to each school’s section of this Web site to obtain an overview of their activities, or contact the Office of Development at (310) 243-2182 to find out more about contributions to specific academic areas or student scholarship funds.

Special Campaigns

In addition to the needs of the individual schools, there are a variety of University-wide projects in need of financial assistance, the most pressing of which are described below.

Loker University Student Union Capital Campaign

Loker Student Union

Based on positive student response, the University has made the Loker University Student Union (LUSU) Expansion Project one of the campus’ top priorities. Construction will commence in 2004 and is expected to be completed by 2007. As state law forbids the use of public monies for construction of student centers, the campus must seek alternate sources of funding to cover the $34 million cost of the project. As an expression of their overwhelming support, nearly 90% of the CSUDH student body voted to nearly double their student fees to help fund the expansion. Approximately $28 million has already been committed to the project through student fee increases. The remaining $6 million must be raised from private sources through the LUSU Capital Campaign.

The University launched the LUSU Expansion Project to renovate the existing 60,000 square feet LUSU building and construct an additional 60,000 square feet of space to address the current and future needs of the campus. In keeping with the sense of community encouraged by the current student union building, the LUSU Expansion Project will not only improve the number and variety of student services available on campus, but will also provide a unique avenue for celebrating the communal history of the campus and the community. This will be accomplished by decorating the interior of the remodeled LUSU with historical photographs accompanied by descriptive and informative captions, and by naming rooms in the facility for significant campus historical figures.

The LUSU now invites members of the community to help us successfully complete our goal. Many exciting opportunities exist for community involvement in the campaign. Individuals who contribute major gifts to the campaign will be permanently and prominently recognized for their generosity through a variety of distinctive naming opportunities. Now is your opportunity to help CSUDH create a unifying landmark space benefiting countless current and future students.

Please contact Kim Clark, Loker University Student Union Director, at (310) 243-3559 to receive more information or to pledge your support.

University Campaign

The University Campaign is a giving program for you, the faculty, administrators and staff – the stakeholders at CSU Dominguez Hills who have so much to gain from seeing the University make strides in stature and its ability to serve students. It is through your hard work and caring about what you do that turns the word “excellence” into reality. The University Campaign asks even more of you – it asks you to make a gift to your university that stands alongside those of alumni, parents, various companies and corporations, and community friends. By doing so, you demonstrate a deep commitment to the University. Your investment in the University provides a priceless point of persuasion when we go to current and prospective donors and ask for their support.

In this academic year of 2003-04, contributions to The University Campaign carry special significance in helping to bridge the gap between state-allocated dollars and those needed to continue to strengthen the institution we have all worked to achieve. Carefully consider the amount of your gift – what is affordable for you. Be assured that what is most important to The University Campaign is your participation.

The Presidential Scholarship

Presidential Scholarships of $3,000 are awarded annually for outstanding academic achievement to graduating high school students and community-college transfer students planning to attend CSU Dominguez Hills. Initiated in 1985, as a means of encouraging students to continue their education and attend Dominguez Hills, the full-fee scholarships contribute to the climate of academic excellence on campus. They also provide the financial support required by many deserving students, not only during the freshman year but also throughout the students’ undergraduate education. The scholarship for community-college transfer students is renewable for one additional year.

Each year, Presidential Scholarship recipients must complete at least 12 units per semester. Also, they are expected to participate in activities planned for Presidential Scholars, participate in the Honors Program and attend the Honors Convocation Ceremony in the spring semester. Additionally, they must meet stringent GPA requirements in order to maintain their renewal eligibility.

This campaign promises to reward more students for their academic excellence making it possible for excellent students to earn a university education and attend CSU Dominguez Hills. One major event that raises funds for scholarships is the President’s Dinner held every spring.

Please join us in celebrating our students at the Sixth Annual President’s Dinner: Benefiting Scholarships, at the Long Beach Hilton on Friday, April 30, 2004. If you are interested in being a sponsor at our President's Dinner or would like more information, please contact the Office of Development at (310) 243-2182 or visit the President's Dinner Web site.
