PORTFOLIO COMPETENCY

(including the Reflective Journal)

A. What must I put in my portfolio?

  1. Three documents from coursework, including reflective journal from fieldwork.
  2. Long range plan (unit plan) from fieldwork
    • Development
    • Implementation
    • Reflection
    • Artifacts (i.e., samples of student work demonstrating learning, such as student writing, videotape, audio tape, and photographs)
  3. Final reflection, to include (but not limited to):
    • What works well to facilitate learning?
    • What areas need improving?
    • Where do I go from here?

B. Procedures:

  1. Start collecting reflective pieces from your coursework for possible inclusion into your portfolio.
  2. Keep a fieldwork journal in which you reflect on at least a week-to-week basis on your teaching and student learning. Below are some questions you might address:
    • How well did teaching/learning activities help students reach the goals?
    • How did the content of this week's plans build on what has been learned previously and how did it connect to what students will be learning next?
    • How did I use or accommodate the diverse experiences (languages, life experiences, special needs) my students brought to the class?
    • How did management procedures facilitate and support the learning environment?
    • What were the observable outcomes (products or processes) of student learning?
    • What would I change if I were to re-teach anything from this week?
  3. During final supervisory meeting, student will present portfolio to fieldwork supervisor and arrange for exit interview.
  4. Supervisor reviews materials
  5. At exit interview:
    • Supervisor will return portfolio, but keep the final reflection for the Fieldwork file.
    • Portfolio checklist will have been completed.
    • Supervisor completes competency summary sheet and will present student with original.
