Research Projects, Grants & Interests

  • Coordinator of The DELTA Local District G Professional Development School: A Partnership with California State University, Dominguez Hills; Los Angeles Unified School District’s Local District G; and Los Angeles Educational Partnership.
  • Coordinate and implement a new model for credentialing beginning teachers, initially supported by a three year, $300,000 grant from the Stuart Foundation, (September 1999 – June 2002). The aim is to produce in a shorter period of time, highly qualified teachers, with the skills and inclination to remain teaching in the inner city. Beginning July 2002 the PDS is supported solely by funds from the university and the school district. Because of the documented success of this PDS, it is now the School of Education model for credentialing beginning teachers in hard-to-staff schools. Credentialing programs for Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education of the same model are currently functioning in Local Districts G, I, & K.
  • Plan and implement teacher training orientations, workshops, and professional experiences integrating the arts and social studies, with a comprehensive, constructivist curriculum that supports all learning styles and intelligences.
  • Collaborating with the Inner City Arts Center, Annenberg Professional Development Program for Elementary Classroom Teachers – providing the elementary teachers in the Local District G Professional Development School meaningful and engaging strategies to incorporate the visual and performing arts into their classroom curriculum.
  • Active performer and composer of popular, folk, and ethnic music.
  • Working with School of Education and Teacher Education faculty to develop curriculum that infuses technology into the Social Studies methods curriculum. The group developed an instructional CD-ROM, presented at national conferences, in-services faculty, and has submitted papers for publication.
Teacher in multi-age classrooms and principal in a public alternative school prior to my career in higher education. Lifelong learner dedicated to renewing pedagogical practices and curriculum development, by integrating the fine and performing arts as the central hub for active learning in the core content areas.
