<< WELCOME >>-<< DAILY SCHEDULE >>

Welcome to the California State University, Dominguez Hills Academic Literacy Institute 2004! This is the first in what we hope will be an annual event focused on academic literacy for high school teachers and administrators. Participation is reserved for those professionals who have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the challenges of preparing students for success in higher education, particularly at four-year institutions. Congratulations on your selection.

A rewarding and challenging curriculum awaits you. Planned collaboratively by district and university faculty, the curriculum for the institute week and follow-up sessions intensely examines the meaning of academic literacy, explores the research on teaching academic literacy, and applies those ideas to the teaching of college-bound juniors and seniors. We aim to make clearer connections between university expectations of entering freshman and K-12 expectations, as articulated in the content standards and assessments. Topics of specific focus include comprehension, the reading-writing connection, academic writing and literacy in the content areas. As a participant, you will receive a set of books carefully selected to support this curriculum at the institute.

The CSUDH Academic Literacy Institute (ALI) will take place in two segments. August 16–20, 2004 consists of five days of intensive instruction. Follow up days in October, November and December will extend the concepts introduced in August and provide support while you conduct a case study with one of your own students. You must attend every session and complete the case study in order to receive the stipend. On the first day of the ALI, the registration and attendance process will be reviewed.

Click here for the September 30th workshop.

You may get additional information about the ALI from your district coordinator. They are: Compton: Diana Stephens; Lynwood: Diane Beach; LAUSD Local District 8: Janet Hironaka; Torrance: Margaret Esfahani. Or you may contact us directly at the email addresses and phone numbers below.

We look forward to seeing you.
