SESSION ONE Outline

Thursday, September 30, 2004

Participants:

Bring a major project/assignment you plan to use this semester that you are interested in reconsidering.. 

Read: Marzano et al. (2001).  Classroom instruction that works: Research-based strategies for increasing student achievement.  ASCD: Alexandria, VA

o        Chapters 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, &10

GOALS:

v      To re-connect to one another and our common learnings from the week-long institute;

v      To share insights gained in the interim;

v      To construct a paradigm that supports Teacher-Participants in moving from “experiencers” of critical arts learning strategies, to DESIGNERS of critical arts learning strategies;

v      To practice that design process with Teacher-Participants’ own curricula;

v      To move forward in building case studies.

9:00      Welcome, Goals for the Day                  

9:15      Debrief David Sherman’s Lessons                       [Poster paper, markers]

Focused DEBRIEFING of David's lesson(s) to unpack the ideas and reveal the paradigm beneath the activities. 

v      “Where does this content come from?”

v      “How did David use intertextuality to pose critical questions with which you grappled?”

v      “What roles did you play in examining relationships between the text and yourselves, the target text and other text, and the target text and the world?”

v      “How did David’s activities move the use of art from illustration to transformation?”

10:45    BREAK

11:00    Video Analysis                                      

Teacher-Participants will view a videotape of a new teacher who good idea does not get as much mileage as it might if it were re-designed.  Critigue, analysis and re-design activities.

12:00    LUNCH (On your own)

12:30    Assignment Re-design                          

Teacher-Participants will use a protocol to reconsider the assignment they brought with them in light of the morning’s discussion.  What design changes might help them get more ‘bang for their buck’?

1:45      Case Studies

Share, review, and plan case study projects.

2:45      Closure and announcements (Margaret O.)

o        Tovani, C. (2000).  I read it but I don’t get it: Comprehension strategies for adolescent readers.

Bring:

o        Focus on English: English Placement Test.
