Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the Transition to Teaching Program?

The Transition to Teaching Program is a federally funded program by the U.S. Department of Education – Office of Improvement and Innovation which seeks to recruit recent college graduates and mid-career professionals.  CSUDH was awarded this multi-million dollar grant in 2004 and 2006.  Our proposal was chosen as a model proposal in the nation and through this grant we are able to offer students an alternative path towards teacher certification.

  1. What are the advantages of this program versus other programs?

The Transition to Teaching Program offers an accelerated preliminary credential program, exclusive access to courses, 3 year individualized coaching for participants, LAUSD/LUSD job placement and tuition reimbursement.

  1. Who qualifies for the Transition to Teaching Program?

Under federal guidelines, our program is designed to serve recent college graduates (within 3 years) who have graduated with a degree in Mathematics or Science and Mid-Career Professionals that have a Bachelor’s degree in these areas or have an extensive background in these content areas.  If you have prior teaching experience as a full-time teacher or have been a substitute for more than one year, please call us regarding eligibility.

  1. I have all of the requirements, how do I apply to the program?

If you have met all of the requirements, please contact our office at 310-243-2668. We will then meet with you and you will be given university and program applications.  We will help with any questions you have regarding the forms.  You will then turn everything into our office and we will notify you when a decision has been made.

  1. What if I do not meet all of the program requirements right now?

If you do not qualify at the moment, do not worry.  Our staff will be more than happy to meet with you and go over the necessary steps to complete the requirements in order to participate in the program.  If you do not qualify for our program, we will give you the steps required to enter the regular credential program at CSUDH.

  1. How do I pay for my tuition?

All program participants will receive financial assistance.  Students may also apply for financial aid through www.fafsa.ed.gov .  In addition, you will also be earning a full time salary as a teacher while completing the program.

  1. Where will my credential allow me to teach?

After you are done with our program, you will earn a Preliminary Credential, which will allow you to teach anywhere in the state of California.

  1. Will any of my credential units transfer towards a Master’s Degree?
