Americorps
Grant Overview
The Project - Mission, Design,
Objectives
This project - CSU Service Learning for
Family Health (CSU-SLFH) AmeriCorps Program is an innovative
statewide partnership involving:
1) the CSU system
2) the non-profit sector
3) state government
The executive summary provides the mission: "to
develop and support community-university partnerships that will
directly address the health and Human service needs identified
by community-based agencies servicing children and families;
enhance the quality of student learning; and promote an ethic of
service." to
develop and support community-university partnerships that will
directly address the health and Human service needs identified
by community-based agencies servicing children and families;
enhance the quality of student learning; and promote an ethic of
service."
The CSU-SLFH project is designed to
involve two communities:
a) Families served by Health and Social
Service Agencies, and
b) Higher Education
By creating AmeriCorps positions that
provide direct service to clients of health and social service
agencies and coordinate community service and service learning
placements for university students, this program will assist in
delivering affordable, high-quality services to a diverse
population throughout California. Our Dominguez Hills program
will serve our surrounding communities.
The three main objectives for this project revolve around some
of the National and Community Service Ethic -
a) Getting Things Done
b) Participant Development
c) Strengthening Communities
Plan - Recruitment
Each of the five campuses involved
collaborated with Community-based Health and Service
organizations to identify local needs to be addressed through
direct service. At Dominguez Hills we have partnered with eight
organizations in Carson, Wilmington and Compton.
Recruitment
Students and members will be recruited
primarily from the student body. Information will be sent via
e-mail, newspapers, clubs, organizations, academic advisors,
flyers, the campus career services, service learning courses,
bulletin boards, and class presentations to faculty and
students.
The focus will be placed on recruiting students enrolled in
health and human services disciplines, but will not be limited
to these areas. Also we will use local print, broadcast media,
and a national referral system, statewide organizations such as
