Medical Technology

Medical Technologists (MT) perform or supervise the performance of clinical laboratory testing in the general and specialized areas of clinical biochemistry, hematology, medical microbiology, immunohema-
tology, immunology, serology and clinical microscopy. Data collected is correlated to patho-physiology and used by health professionals in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Medical Techno-
gist review and conduct research activities.

Program of Study
The following courses or their equivalent must be completed before the student begins clinical training, for either certificate, graduate or undergraduate students. Courses are offered during the semester, and
students may begin taking courses during any semester. The asterisked courses are designated as Pre-
clinical, and they must be taken in this country within the five years prior to the start of clinical training. Undergraduate students must also complete all general studies requirements before the start of clinical training.

Training
Students who have completed the above prerequisites apply for Medical Technology training in October to begin training in July.  Students must meet Supplemental Criteria as noted in the University Catalog in
order to be eligible for training. After acceptance into clinical training, students in the Medical Techno-
logy Option register for the following courses over two semesters. Undergraduate students are eligible to earn a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Sciences degree at the end of the clinical year. Graduate students may apply the courses marked with # toward the Master of Science in Clinical Sciences degree.  Certifi- cate students receive a certificate of completion.

Application for Clinical Placement
After all applications are received, applicants are scheduled for an interview with the program director, who reviews the student’s grades for accuracy and determines whether the student will meet all require- ments by the beginning of training. Those students who are not recommended for placement or recom-
mended with reservations are told the specific reasons for the decision and given advising by the program director. For those students recommended by the program director, a second interview with the Committee for Clinical Laboratory Experience (CCLE) is scheduled. The CCLE is made up of members from the affiliate and from CSUDH. At the conclusion of the interviews, the CCLE makes a recommendation to the program director about each student’s placement, qualifications, and any additional concerns. The program director informs students in writing of the final placement decision.

Supplemental Criteria
From among the applicants for a Clinical Option, the Committee for Clinical Laboratory Experience (CCLE) will determine those applicants who are accepted to clinical training on the basis of the following Supplemental Admission Criteria, as listed in the University Catalog:

1. Academic success reflected by:
    a. 3.00 GPA in required “pre-clinical coursework” (minimum 3.00 on a 4.00 scale);
    b. desirable “pattern” of academic performance (i.e. consistent good grades and/or improvement);
    c. completion of the General Studies requirements
2. Evaluation by the Committee for Clinical Laboratory Experience (CCLE) of the student’s potential to
succeed in the program and the profession (appearance, attitude, interest, enthusiasm, poise,
motivation, expectations, career planning, maturity, social understanding and involvement, flexibility
    and stability).
3. Physical, professional and emotional fitness for the demands of the job must be verified by a
physician and three letters of recommendation. At least one of these letters should validate relevant
work experience and/or knowledge of the field.  Accordingly, it is recommended that one be from an
employer (if employed in a health related field) and the others from faculty teaching the pre-clinical
coursework at CSU, Dominguez Hills.  Recommendations should address recent activities.
4. Completion of two semesters in residence prior to beginning the clinical training.
5. Clarity of expression (oral and written) and relevant extracurricular activity (e.g. active member or
officer of a social club, Clinical Science Club, etc.) as revealed by the extemporaneous essay and in
    the application form.
6. Have no felony conviction.
7. Other factors that will be considered, but which will not guarantee selection are: prior qualified
application, efforts to seek psychosocial balance in the program, and veteran status.

Accreditation
The Medical Technology program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Labora-
tory Sciences (NAACLS). Graduates of the program are eligible for the certification examination of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the certification examination of the National Certifi-
cation Agency (NCA), and the licensure examination of the California State Department of Health.

Certificate Program
In addition to the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, the Department offers a Certifi-
cate to those students who have already earned a Bachelor of Science degree, and who complete the prerequisite and clinical training requirements for their respective options.
