Fall 2012 Financial Aid Checks
Fall 2012 financial aid refund checks will begin to be mailed to your mailing address by Student Financial Services prior to the first week of classes. Classes begin on August 25, 2012. The check will be the balance after payment of any outstanding University obligations (e.g., registration fees, housing charges, etc). Financial aid awards are based on full-time enrollment (12 units undergraduate & credential students and 8 units (500 series) for master students). If you enroll less than full-time, your awards will be adjusted.
Checks will continue to be mailed each week during the semester. If you receive a check and then decide to withdraw from the University or drop units, you will be required to repay all or part of the financial aid received. For information on procedures to drop a course or to withdraw from the University contact the Registration Help Line at (310) 243-3645.
Direct Loan Disclosure Statement
If you plan to borrow a Federal Direct Loan, you will receive a Disclosure Statement from the Direct Loan Servicing Center. Please Note: The Anticipated Disbursement date is NOT the date your Direct Loan will be available to you. Financial aid awards are credited to your student account prior to the first week of classes.
2012-2013 Financial Aid Deadlines & Important Changes
Beginning January 1, 2012, you may submit your 2012-2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The priority filing deadline for the FAFSA is Friday, March 2, 2012. Complete and electronically sign your FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov.
To reduce possible mistakes and streamline the financial aid application process, students and parents may be eligible to use the Internal Revenue Service Retrieval process. This means when you fill out your FAFSA you may be eligible to automatically transfer your federal tax information directly from the IRS into your FAFSA! To use this feature, we strongly encourage you and your parents to file your federal tax returns as early as possible before completing the FAFSA.
The deadline to submit all requested documents is Thursday, May 17, 2012. Only students that meet both deadlines (March 2 and May 17) will have their tuition fees deferred. Students not meeting the deadlines will be expected to pay their tuition fees from their own resources.
Beginning 2012-2013, the Financial Aid Office will no longer be able to accept a copy of the students or parents federal tax return. Students and parents will be required to submit (if requested) an IRS Tax Return Transcript. To request a transcript, free of charge, of a 2011 tax return from the IRS in one of three ways:
- Online at www.irs.gov
- By calling 1-800-908-9946
- By mail using the IRS Form 4506T-EZ
Please visit the following website for more detailed information on how the request a tax transcript: http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=232168,00.html
