Financial Certification and Costs

As a public university, CSUDH is pleased to be able to provide students with a quality education at a reasonable cost, especially when compared to average price of a university education in the United States.

What is Financial Certification?

In order to study in the United States as an international student, The U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) requires you to provide documentation showing that you have sufficient financial resources to complete your course of study.

As part of the application process, you will complete the Affidavit of Financial Support for International Students to show that you have enough funds to cover all the costs associated with your first year of full-time study. Your financial institution must provide a certification that you have at least the amount required available, or that funds are available from a reliable source or sponsor.

How Much Will I Need?

As part of the application process, you will need to show financial certification of $30,000 for your first year of study. This amount is the same for both undergraduate and graduate students. The $30,000 estimate includes tuition, fees, and living expenses including apartment, utilities, meals, books, supplies, CSU mandatory health insurance, transportation and other personal expenses. What About Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Work Income?

Unfortunately, there are no scholarships or financial aid available at CSUDH to international students. The Affidavit of Financial Support for International Students identifies your sponsor by name and verifies that they will be able to support all your expenses for the duration of your stay (working is not to be part of your earned income of support). You will need to have adequate sponsorship in order to remain enrolled at CSUDH and remain living in the United States.

Limited work opportunities are available on campus and international students should not expect to work to cover the cost of their education in the United States.

The bottom line -- please make sure you have adequate funds available before applying to CSUDH.

The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by The Board of Trustees.

If you live off campus, be prepared to pay an additional $4,000 a year.
All CSU international students must pay for a specific health insurance policy as defined in CSU Executive Order 622.
If you are in a music, art, or science program, additional fees may be charged to cover extra expenses, such as choir outfits, recitals, laboratory costs, research fees, etc. Details should be provided in the class schedule and/or catalog. Prices are subject to change.
These expenses do not include purchasing a car which will cost you a minimum of additional $12,000.
The California State University System charges the same tuition and fees for all 23 campuses. The CSU System non-resident tuition is below the U.S. national average for university non-resident tuition and fees.
