Student Development Office
Career Counselor Internship

Description: Cal State Univ. Dominguez Hills' Student Development Office provides career counseling, psychological counseling and employment services to CSUDH students and alumni.  We are seeking applicants for a career counselor internship for academic year 07/08.  There is a stipend.  Intern is provided training and supervision, a private office and a computer with email account.  After appropriate training, intern will assist with drop-in, critique resumes, evaluate and interpret assessments, take individual career appointments, present workshops, and work on special projects, including job fairs.

Dominguez Hills is a mid-size CSU campus in Carson, Ca, centrally located between the South Bay, Los Angeles, and Long Beach.  The student population is the most ethnically diverse in the CSU system, 70% female, and comprised of traditional age students, and returning adults seeking new careers.

Responsibilities:  During initial training, interns will attend career workshops offered by the office, observe and participate in career counseling appointments, review and interpret assessments, conduct information interviews with staff, observe and participate in the critique of resumes and personal statements, and learn about services and programs of the office.

Through training, the intern will observe counseling styles used in the office, and when ready, work with individual students on career issues using a comprehensive career planning model.  By co-facilitating workshops with staff counselors, the intern will observe the diversity of styles and methods used by the staff and gain experience in a variety of workshops.  The intern will later lead the workshops alone.

Interns will participate in other activities of the office including attending staff meetings, doing "intake," assisting with career fairs, meeting and greeting employers, and participating in other professional development activities.

Interns will each have an individual project, selected in conjunction with the Director and supervisor, to complete during the internship.  This project will give the intern concrete evidence of having contributed to the office and will enhance the intern's resume.   Past projects have included developing and presenting a special topic workshop or panel, developing a handout, or writing a resource for the office website.

Requirements:  Interns must have a BA degree and be pursuing a career related to career counseling in higher education. Candidates pursuing a graduate degree related to the field of career counseling will be given first preference. Availability to work a minimum of 12 hours during scheduled office hours (M&T 8-5, W & Th 8-7, F 8-2) is required. They must have the interpersonal skills, education, and experience which make them eligible to provide direct service to students and interact well with faculty and staff. Demonstrated ability to work well with culturally diverse populations is highly desirable. Experience with computer-based career guidance programs is preferred.

Salary:  $2,000 stipend
Duration of internship:  2 semesters (Fall & Spring)
