Information Technology Report 12.07- Ron Bergmann

Ron highlighted elements of the report, which he has shown to the Council of Deans. Charts in the report will be updated as he receives new information.

  • Instructional Media Services (IMS)
    • IMS has rolled out 18 new Enhanced Technology Classrooms (ETCs) since summer.
    • College-level Web sites have been updated.
    • The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will soon have a new $10K PC/Mac workstation to be used by faculty to develop course material. The workstation was specified with accessible technology in mind.
    • The Instructional Media Center was recarpeted.
    • The IT Report contains charts about classroom deliveries.
  • Instructional Computing, Network and Telephone Services (ICNTS)
    • The Welch Hall labs have 119 computers, many of which were provided by funds from the ASI Technology Fee.
    • Open hours in WH 160 have been extended to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
    • The Chancellor's Office has provided funds for Juniper Firewalls. Core switches will be refreshed--also with dollars from the Chancellor's Office. The switches will be augmented to provide campuswide wireless access.
    • IronPort Anti-Spam™ came online this fall. The network receives about two million spam messages/week.
    • All campus telephones now have caller-ID.
  • Administrative Information Systems (AIS)
    • AIS is developing a student teacher tracking system (required by the Chancellor's Office) with the College of Education.
    • The all new HelpWeb is online, and Ron is getting good reports about this online one-stop place to report technology problems. The ability to report Blackboard problems will be added to HelpWeb soon.
    • University Web site: Page 20 of the report has a chart of Web site hits. The report will be more granular in the future, and a unique visitors category will be added.
  • IT and Academic Affairs had collaborated on a 60/40 funding split to rollout PCs to faculty. Twenty-five PCs have been added to smart classrooms. A total of 306 PCs have been rolled out since Ron joined the staff one year ago.
  • Send your questions about the report to Ron.

[Draft] CSU Security Policy - Ron Bergmann

  • Ron sent out an electronic copy of the policy to TAC members about a month ago. Our comments are due at the Chancellor's Office (CO) tomorrow, after which the policy will be pushed to campuses as an Executive Order (EO). CSU security officers met earlier and provided their comments to the CO.
  • Once the EO is in hand, we can use the CO's policy as is, customize it into our own policy, add stronger language, and/or add procedures.
  • Please send your comments about the policy to Ron.
  • Ron and Dave Bradfield (CFA representative) met and discussed the acceptable use policy and our current security policy.

ETCs of the Future - Ron Bergmann

  • A wireless projector with BlueTooth to the podium.
  • PoleVault--about $2,200
  • Yvette says that all CSU Fullerton classrooms are smart and that components are installed in wall boxes.
  • Ron plans test rooms, where wall boxes and different kinds of projectors can be tried out. We can't afford the $11K/room that CSUF spends.
  • Please send your ideas about ETCs of the future to Ron.

TechEd Conference - Ron Bergmann

  • The 13th Annual Technology in Education Conference and Exposition will be held at the Ontario Convention Center April 13-16, 2008. Provost Sam Wiley and Ron shared the registration fees of $2,000 so that all CSUDH faculty, staff, and students can attend. It's a good place to see such things as new technology in smart classrooms and using podcasting in teaching.
  • Note the early registration deadline: February 17, 2008
