Test Exemptions for the EPT/ELM

Who needs to take the test? Are you exempt? Answer the following questions to see if you are exempt or need to take the test for the EPT and ELM.

English Placement Test (EPT) Requirement
Do you need to take the EPT Test?
Please answer the following questions.
No. Question Answer
1. Completion in the "exempt" category on the Early Assessment of Readiness for College English taken in conjunction with the 11th grade California Standards Test in English Language Arts?

2. A score of 500 or higher on the verbal section of the SAT I, taken on or after April 1995?
3. A score of 470 or higher on the verbal section of the SAT or SAT I, taken before April 1995?

4. A score of 22 or higher on the English section of the ACT taken October 1989 or later?

5. A score of 3, 4 or 5 on the Language and Composition or the Literature and Composition examination of the College Board Advanced Placement Program (AP)?

6. A satisfactory score on the CSU English Equivalency Examination taken in 1993 or before?

7. A score of 680 or above on the College Board SAT II Writing Test taken May 1998 or after (660 between April 1995 and April 1998)?

8. A score of 600 or above on the College Board Achievement SAT II Writing Test taken March 1995 or before?

9. A C grade or higher in a college level English Composition course that satisfies the General Education-Breath requirement?

If you answered no to ALL of the questions above, then you need to take the EPT. The EPT must be taken before registering for classes at CSU Dominguez Hills. Please take the test at the first opportunity. If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are exempt from the test. Please verify that the appropriate test score or college transcript is sent to the CSU Dominguez Hills Admissions Office. Entry Level Mathematics Test (ELM) Requirement
Do you need to take the ELM Test?
Please answer the following questions.

1. Placement in the "unconditionally exempt" category on the Early Assessment of Readiness for College Mathematics taken in conjunction with the 11th grade California Standards Test in High School Mathematics or Algebra II?

2. Placement in the "conditionally exempt" category on the Early Assessment of Readiness for College Mathematics taken in conjunction with the 11th grade California Standards Test in High School Mathematics or Algebra II plus successful completion of a CSU-approved math or math-related course or activity taken before you enroll at a CSU campus?

3. A score of 550 or higher on the Mathematics section of the SAT taken October 1989 or later?

4. A score of 23 or higher on the Mathematics section of the ACT taken October 1989 or later?

5. A score of 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Mathematics examination (AB or BC) or the AP Statistics examination?

6. A C grade or higher in a college level mathematics course that satisfies the General Education-Breath requirement?

If you answered no to ALL of the questions above, then you need to take the ELM. The ELM must be taken before registering for classes at CSU Dominguez Hills. Please take the test at the first opportunity. If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are exempt from the test. Please verify that the appropriate test score or college transcript is sent to the CSU Dominguez Hills Admissions Office.
