Teatro Dominguez is a multicultural theatre company composed of faculty members, staff, and students of DH who are dedicated to promoting cross cultural understanding on our campus and in our surrounding communities using the arts. Teatro Dominguez wants to use drama for social change and give minority students leadership opportunies that will help prepare them for significant contributions to their communities. What does Teatro Dominguez do? 1. Shortened Play readings and follow up discussions which focus on multicultural issues. For instance, last year, we read plays like IN SPLENDID ERROR, about the famous abolitionist Frederic Douglass; THE INTERVIEW, about Latin denial, and THE WASH, about Asian American immigrants. 2. Touring Shows - the Teatro also takes ethnic folktales and dramatizes them into short plays that perform for local elementary school students. Last year, we toured TRICKSTER TALES, adapted by Patricia Rinaldi, at over 15 local 2nd grade classrooms. This year, we are bringing COYOTITA - THE LITTLE COYOTE to local schools. The play follows a Gabrielino coyote all around the world on her search for wisdom. Original music by Christopher Gamboa, Masks created by Ric Macias, and Directed by Naomi Herrera (all students). 3. Readings of student written work that focuses on multicultural issues. This semester, we brought BLACK MONOLOGUES BY 20TH CENTURY HEROES - three African American women (Zora Neale Hurston, Mae Jemison, and Fanny Lou Hamer) speaking to students in local middle schools - a twenty minute piece by student Sunee Foley. 4. Guest Workshops - Minority artists work with our students, like Evelina Fernandez, who met with our Playwrighting Class and brought her production of HOW ELSE AM I SUPPOSSED TO KNOW I'M STILL ALIVE with Lupe Ontiveros and Angela Moya to our campus. Why you should join Teatro Dominguez? The Teatro is designed for students, not future actors. In fact, over half of the students in our play readings have never been on stage before. Our intention with this company is to provide high quality programs that inform, delight, and promote social change. For the students involved with the company, it is a great chance to develop strong social and communication skills, the ability to exercise one's imagination and creative skills, and the capacity to solve problems. Students can now get academic credit for their work as actors, directors, discussion leaders, stage managers, playwrights, and business managers.
