SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES |
|
In 13 previous meetings, CSUDH holds a
10-3-0 advantage over Sonoma State. Earlier this year, the
Toros pulled out a 3-2 win in Carson on a breakaway goal by
Francisco Corona with just three minutes remaining in
regulation. In that game, CSUDH outshot SSU 23-11. |

Sonoma State enters the CCAA Tournament on
a four-game win streak after defeating Chico State, 2-0, in
their regular season finale in Chico last weekend. SSU
clinched the CCAA North Division with an 8-5-1 mark and is
12-6-2 overall. Sonoma State sports an identical record at
home and on the road at 6-3-2. They are a perfect 7-0-0 when
leading at the half. Freshman forward Andrew Bailey leads the
Seawolf attack with 26 points on 12 goals and two assists.
Four others have reached double figures, led by senior Michael
Nathan with 19 points on four goals and a team-high 11
assists. Sophomore netminder Clark Rupp has seen nearly all
the action in goal compiling a 0.98 goals against average,
including eight shutouts in 19 starts in between the pipes.

A QUICK LOOK BACK:
The Toros continued their torrid end of the season run with three
CCAA wins on the road last week. CSUDH shutout CS San Bernardino,
3-0, on Monday and followed it up with a 5-1 drubbing of Cal State
L.A. on Wednesday night. The Toros closed out the regular season
schedule with a 3-1 win at Cal Poly Pomona last Saturday.
LOOKING AHEAD:
CSUDH will host the 2004 CCAA Men's & Women's Soccer
Championship Tournament for the second-consecutive year. Both the
men's and women's semifinal games will take place on Friday at
Toro Field. No. 3 seed UC San Diego will play No. 2 seed Cal State
Bakersfield beginning at 4:30. No. 4 seed Sonoma State will then
play No. 1 seed CS Dominguez Hills under the lights at 7:00.
TOROS FINISH REGULAR SEASON WITH WIN AT
POMONA, 3-1:
Junior forward Francisco Corona (Compton, CA/Compton HS) tallied
the game-winning goal, his team-leading eighth of the season, to
propel the Toros to a 3-1 win at Cal Poly Pomona last Saturday
night in the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular
season finale. The victory put the finishing touch on a near
perfect league season and a fifth-consecutive CCAA South Division
Crown. Chris Ocampo (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) put CSUDH up quickly
in the 5th minute on a header off a corner kick from Corona.
Corona made it 2-0 in the 69th minute making a nice run and
eluding the goalkeeper before tapping the ball into an empty net.
The Broncos had a golden opportunity to slice the deficit in half,
but Peter Wallace drilled a penalty kick just wide. A short while
later, Corona set up teammate Kei Kamara (Lawndale/Leuzinger HS)
with a beautiful pass and Kamara knocked his shot into an empty
net. CPP finally got on the board in the 79th minute, but it was
too little too late to stop a very hot CSUDH side. Cal State
Dominguez Hills held an 11-10 advantage in shots and, in what was
a very physical game, the two teams combined for seven yellow
cards and 45 fouls.

KAMARA NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
Freshman forward Kei Kamara has been named the 2004 California
Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Most Valuable Player
of the Year, as selected by the league head coaches. Kamara, a
freshman from Lawndale, has led the Toros to a 16-2-2 overall
record and a CCAA South Division Crown with a 12-0-2 mark in CCAA
play. He finished the regular season ranked first in the CCAA in
goals scored (15) and goals per game average (0.75) and ranked
fourth in assists (8) and assists per game average (0.40). Kamara
also ranks second in CCAA points (38) and points per game average
(1.90). Five of Kamara's goals were game-winners, tying him for
second in the CCAA at season's end. The MVP honor is the fourth in
the past five years for the Toros, who have dominated CCAA play
over that span, winning four of the past five CCAA titles. The
others are: Juan Carlos Bolanos (2000), Sean Lockhart (2001),
Victor Guerrero (2003) and Kamara (2004).
HOT, HOT...HOT!:
Cal State Dominguez Hills is one of the hottest NCAA Division II
teams in the country, entering the week riding a 17-game unbeaten
streak and an eight-game win streak. The Toros last defeat was
early in the season on Aug. 30 in overtime at Bellingham, WA,
against regional opponent Western Washington. Since then, CSUDH
has put up win streaks of five, two and now eight games heading
into this weekend's tournament.
DYNAMIC DUO:
If there was a definition in Webster's for "Dynamic Duo,"
it would certainly be forwards Francisco Corona and Kei Kamara.
Batman & Robin had nothing on these two as they pack a 1-2
punch in the CCAA scoring department. Corona leads the conference
with 42 points with 12 goals and a league-best 18 assists. Kamara
is second in the CCAA with 38 points and leads the league in goals
scored with 15. Combined, the duo has scored 80 points with an
amazing 30 goals and 26 assists, accounting for 40% of the CSUDH
scoring on the season.
CORONA SETS SINGLE SEASON ASSIST MARK:
Francisco Corona registered four assists in the Toros three
victories last week to break the CSUDH all-time single season
assist record. The 5-9 junior now has 18 on the season, surpassing
the previous standard of 15 set by former CSUDH all-american and
current assistant coach, Sean Lockhart, who set the record in 2000
during the Toros national championship run.
SPEAKING OF CONFERENCE RECORDS:
Here's a number for you: 71-9-5. That is the Toros record in CCAA
play over the past six seasons (1999-04) for an impressive .964
win percentage. The mark over the past three seasons is just as
impressive: 43-2-1 for an amazing .946 winning percentage.
CORONA MOVIN' ON UP:
Corona's 42 points tie him for fourth all-time in the
single-season points category with former great Mike Brocki
(1982). Corona is only four points shy of tying the all-time mark
set by 2000 NCAA Player of the Year Juan Carlos Bolanos and former
all-american and L.A. Galaxy player Alex Bengard (2000).
THE TORO CHARGE:
CSUDH is now 16-2-2 overall and 12-0-2 in CCAA play. Leading the
offensive charge with 42 points is Corona followed by Kamara with
38. Jesse Graham (19 pts) and Rick Cobb (18 pts) follow. Three
others have scored in double figures, while 14 players on the
roster have scored at least one point. As a team, the Toros have
outscored the opposition by an amazing 63-17 margin in goals.
Goalkeeper Kyle Polak has compiled an impressive 0.74 goals
against average, allowing 13 goals in 19 games played in between
the pipes. He also has notched seven shutouts on the year.
