CARSON, Calif.-Dianne Garza (Temple City HS)
converted a penalty kick in the second overtime period to propel
Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 2-1 CCAA win today over UC Davis at
Toro Field.
It was a scoreless game until the 83rd minute
when Garza scored the first of her two goals. Junior forward
Shannon Donnelly (LB Poly HS) hit a shot from the left side of the
box that Aggie keeper Christine Ogden made a diving save to her
left on. However, Garza collected the rebound at the mouth of the
goal and found the back of the net to give CSUDH a 1-0 lead with
seven minutes remaining in regulation.
UC Davis' Tristan Ngoon sent the game into
overtime tallying the equalizer just over two minutes later. Toro
defender Jill Toda (Gahr HS) tried to clear the ball at the top of
the box off of her head, but instead it found the feet of Ngoon
who made CSUDH pay for the mistake. Ngoon collected the ball, then
beat the drawn out Toros keeper Heather Williams (Canyon HS) with
a chip shot tying the game 1-1.
CSUDH had an opportunity to win the game in the
first sudden-death period, however, Tanya Wilson's (Palm Springs
HS) shot deflected off the top of the cross bar. Both team's
defenses played well until an Aggie defender pulled down CSUDH's
Toda inside the box setting up Garza's penalty kick at 114:44.
Garza, the CCAA's leading scorer, set up and hit her shot to the
near post for the game-winner.
Davis controlled much of the game especially in
the first half where the Ags enjoyed a 10-4 shot advantage.
However, Williams made several highlight saves to keep the game
scoreless until the final minutes. Williams notches the win with
eight saves in goal. Christine Ogden made four saves in the net
but took the loss for UC Davis.
CSUDH (12-2-1, 7-2-1 CCAA), who came into the
game ranked No. 13 in the latest NSCAA polls, returns to action on
Sunday hosting CCAA foe Chico State. Kick off is set for 3:00 pm.
UC Davis (8-4, 5-3 CCAA) will travel to Cal State LA on Sunday.
