CARSON, Calif.-Junior RHP Aldo Silva (2-0) went
the distance tossing a one-hit complete game shutout victory over
visiting Vanguard University as Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated
the Lions for the second day in a row 6-0 today at Toro Field.
Senior C Edgar Esqueda provided all the scoring
Silva would need in the fourth inning. With one out, Esqueda made
it 1-0 when he smacked a double down the right field line scoring
Damien Lopez who had reached earlier on a triple.
CSUDH (3-0) pushed across three more runs in
the fifth inning on four hits to make it 4-0. In the inning,
junior RF Joe Gevas hit a run-scoring single through the right
side to plate Eric Pringle for the first run of the inning. After
a Frank Perez single loaded the bases, 1B Danny Jacobs hit a
sacrifice fly to center field to make it 3-0. After RHP Matt
Caston replaced Vanguard starter Joe Carnahan on the mound, the
Toros would score another run on a passed ball for a 4-0 lead.
The Toros scored two more insurance runs in the
seventh on two hits. Gevas led off with a double and was balked to
third followed by a walk to Perez. After Perez stole second base,
3B Damien Lopez hit a 2-run single to left field accounting for
the final score.
Silva, in his first start of the 2002 season,
went the distance tossing 9 innings allowing only Vanguard's Jason
Searle's single in the third inning. Silva walked 3 and fanned 6
batters while facing just seven batters over the minimum.
Offensively, CSUDH was led by Damien Lopez going 2-4 with a run
and 2 RBI while Joe Gevas was perfect at the plate going 2-2 with
2 runs and an RBI while walking twice. Edgar Esqueda and Frank
Perez also added two hits each.
Vanguard's (2-7) Joe Carnahan (0-2) was tagged
with the loss going 4-1/3 inning allowing 4 runs on 8 hits. Matt
Caston pitched the final 3-2/3 innings allowing 3 runs while
striking out 6 batters.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in
non-conference action this Saturday hosting Concordia University.
The game against the Eagles is a doubleheader scheduled for an 11
a.m. first pitch.
