Toros Tie Cal Baptist, Game Suspended Due to Darkness
February 12, 2002

RIVERSIDE, Calif.--The Toros and Cal Baptist were deadlocked in a 7-7 tie through 10 innings when the game was called due to darkness today in Riverside.

CSUDH (4-1-1) took a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning thanks in part to back-to-back home runs from LF Jason Pruitt and RF Joe Gevas. Pruitt's 2-run shot was followed by Gevas' second solo shot of the game. However, Cal Baptist (5-4-1) took advantage of a one-out CSUDH error to post 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, then tied the game with 3 more runs in the eighth.

Gevas put the Toros on the board in the first inning with a two-out solo blast to right center. CBU answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning, but the Toros took the lead again with a single run in the third inning on an RBI single by Pruitt. Then in the fourth inning, C Edgar Esqueda brought home two more runs with a 1-out single through the left side of the infield giving CSUDH a 4-1 lead before the 5th inning back-to-back long balls.

The Lancers took advantage of three Toros miscues and a 15-hit attack. LHP Brad Allen (0-1), coming off a rocky first start last Saturday against Concordia, pitched the first 5-2/3 innings allowing 4 runs, one earned, on 9 hits while striking out 4 batters. RHP Harry Trejo pitched a hitless 1-2/3 innings before LHP Steve Ressa came out of the pen to allow 3 runs on 3 hits in 2/3 of an inning. RHP Brian Cortes came on to pitch the final 2.0 innings allowing only 3 hits while striking out 2.

On the day, CSUDH was led by Gevas going 2-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI on two solo home runs. Pruitt knocked in 3 runs going 2-5 at the plate including a 2-run blast.

CSUDH begins CCAA action this week with a 4-game set against UC San Diego. The first game of the series is set for Thursday, Feb. 14 in San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
