Ryan Larson homered twice to lead UC San Diego
to a 9-2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in California
Collegiate Athletic Association baseball action at Triton Baseball
Field Thursday.
Larson, a senior third baseman out of Palomar
College and Carlsbad High School, hit a solo shot to put the
Tritons on the board in the second inning before launching a
two-run home run in a six-run third inning. Sophomore designated
hitter Jeff Riddle added two hits and three runs batted in of his
own, including a two-run single in the third.
John Beaven (2-0) threw 7.1 innings, allowing
two runs, five hits and three walks while striking out five Toro
batters.
Freshman shortstop Keith Hernandez
(Vista/Rancho Buena Vista HS) provided two hits in four at-bats
while junior centerfielder Matt Smith (La Mesa/Helix HS) finished
with a triple, RBI and two runs scored.
For the visiting Toros who were playing in
their CCAA season opener, junior designated hitter Frank Perez
went three-for-four with the lone RBI. Senior leftfielder Jason
Pruitt had a double and scored both runs.
Junior Rick Moore (1-1) took the loss, giving
up seven hits and eight runs in four innings of work.
Cal State Dominguez Hills drops to 4-2-1
overall, 0-1 in conference play. With the win, the Tritons improve
to 7-5-1 overall on the season, 3-2 in the CCAA.
UCSD and Cal State Dominguez Hills will meet in
the second game of this four-game weekend CCAA series at Triton
Baseball Field tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is at 1:30 PM. The
teams will then play a doubleheader Saturday in Carson beginning
at 12:00 PM.
