CARSON,
Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills pounded out 30 hits and scored 22
runs on the day as they swept visiting UC San Diego today winning
the first game 11-4 then shutting out the Tritons 11-0 in the
nightcap. The sweep gave the Toros a split of this week's
four-game CCAA series against UCSD.
In the first game, UC San Diego struck first
with a leadoff home run by LF John Bologna. CSUDH answered back
with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning which included
an RBI single by DH Frank Perez making it 2-1. The Tritons tied it
in the third with an unearned run on a throwing error by Toros SS
Eric Pringle.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took the lead for
good with a run in the bottom of the inning on a run scoring
groundout by Perez which scored CF Jason Pruitt who had reached
earlier on a single. CSUDH made it 6-2 with a three-run fifth
inning on a run-scoring single by 1B Danny Jacobs followed by a
2-run single by LF Mike Roux.
UCSD pushed across another run in the sixth
before the Toros plated five runs in the bottom of the inning to
make it 11-3. In the inning, CSUDH got an RBI single by RF Joe
Gevas, a 2-run single by Mike Roux, an RBI single by 3B Damien
Lopez followed by a run-scoring single by Eric Pringle.
The Tritons would score another run in the
ninth but that was as close as they would get as starting RHP
Chris Ingstad (2-0) went the distance for the Toros to earn the
win. Ingstad went 9 innings allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 11 hits
while striking out 6. RHP Alexander Cremidan (1-1) took the loss
for UCSD going the first 5 innings allowing 6 runs, 2 earned, on 9
hits.
In
the game, Cal State Dominguez Hills was led by Roux's 4 RBI on two
hits. Jason Pruitt went 3-4 with 4 runs scored while Joe Gevas
went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI. The Toros also got three hits
by Damien Lopez. For UC San Diego, John Bologna went 3-4 with two
RBI including a home run. DH Jeff Riddle and RF Philip Bretsch
each added two hits a piece.
In the nightcap, the Toros had a 6-run sixth
inning to fuel the twinbill sweep. After pushing across single
runs in the first, second and fourth innings, CSUDH got two runs
in the fifth highlighted by Edgar Esqueda's RBI single making it
5-0. Then in the sixth, the Toros had seven hits in the inning
including an RBI double by Danny Jacobs, a run-scoring single by
2B David Keesee, a bases loaded walk, a 2-run single by Eric
Pringle followed by a RBI single by Jason Pruitt to account for
the 11-0 final score.
RHP Don Bracken (1-0) pitched the first 5-1/3
scoreless innings to earn his first win in a CSUDH uniform. He
strikes out 6 with no walks while giving up only 3 hits. LHP Steve
Ressa and RHP Brian Cortes pitched the final 1-2/3 hitless innings
in relief. LHP Andy Hanau (1-2) took the loss going the first
4-1/3 innings allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks.
In the game, the Toros were led by Esqueda who
was perfect at the plate going 4-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
Eric Pringle went 2-4 with a run and 2 RBI's. UCSD's Jeff Riddle
accounted for two of the Tritons three hits in the game.
CSUDH is now 6-3-1 overall and 2-2 in CCAA play
while UC San Diego is 8-7-1 and 4-4 in league action. The Toros
are back in action this Wednesday hosting Cal Baptist University.
