Toros and Warriors Split in CCAA Softball
February 16, 2002

TURLOCK (Feb. 16) - Without its starting shortstop and one of the team's leading hitters, the CSU Stanislaus softball team found life a little tough on the softball field today. The Warriors, however, did pull out a doubleheader split against California Collegiate Athletic Association foe Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon.

CSU Dominguez Hills capitalized on three Warrior errors to win the opener, 7-5. Then Janelle Hendrix's three-run home run led the Warriors to a 4-2 win for the split.

"It was hard without Josette (Belarmino), but we use the depth that we had and managed," CSU Stanislaus head coach Jan Schefkowitz said. "I thought we did pretty good."

Hendrix, who started at shortstop for the first time in her career Friday afternoon in place of the injured Belarmino, belted a high-flying home run in the fifth inning to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead in game two. The Warriors added another run in the sixth on a single by Monica Mendez for the final score.

The Warriors defense was forced to make adjustments when Belarmino was sidelined with a torn ACL. Lisa Spencer played second base for the first time in her collegiate career. CSU Stanislaus committed six errors in the twinbill, including four costly ones in the opener loss.

Jamie Harkins, the hard-luck starting pitcher for the Warriors, picked up the loss in game one. She went six innings and struck out five. Rachelle Verhoeven hit her second career home run - a two-run shot - in the sixth and finished with a 2-for-3, two RBI game.

Verhoeven, the starter in game two, pitched out of a seventh inning jam to pick-up her second victory of the season.

Maile Laban had two hits, including a double to lead the Warriors in game two.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-6 overall, 3-3 CCAA) was led byRoAna Lutz, who had four hits in the twinbill. Sasha Shell was 3-for-3 with two RBi and a triple in the first game.
