Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.-The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team used a 7-run third and a 6-run seventh inning to cruise to a 17-3 non-conference baseball victory over visiting Cal Baptist University today at Toro Field.

CSUDH (7-3-1) got on the board first with a run in the second inning on a leadoff double by LF Mike Roux. After he was advanced to third base on a wild pitch, C Michael Amezcua got him home on a run-scoring groundout making it 1-0.

Cal Baptist (8-6-1) took a brief 3-1 lead plating three runs in their half of the third inning. RHP Ramon Mata came on to start the inning for the Toros and walked two batters and hit another to load the bases with two outs. CBU's SS Gerald Martinez tied the game with an RBI single then took the lead on a 2-run single up the middle by RF Oscar Enriguez.

But the Toros answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Starting Lancer RHP Dustin Giles opened the flood gates with a throwing error with the bases loaded. With one out, Amezcua hit a come-backer to Giles who threw wide past the catcher for the force at home scoring two runs to tie the game. After Toros SS Eric Pringle walked to re-load the bases, CF Jason Pruitt cleared the bags with a triple to right field making it 6-3. RF Joe Gevas reached and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Cal Baptist which plated Pruitt making it 7-3. DH Frank Perez then hit an RBI single up the middle to close out the scoring in the inning.

CSUDH pushed across three more runs in the fifth inning on four hits. With runners on second and third, Gevas launched a 2-run triple to left center field to give the Toros a 10-3 lead. After RHP Bryan Harris relieved Giles on the mound for CBU, Perez promptly singled to left center making it 11-3.

The Toros closed out the scoring with six runs in the seventh inning. With runners on first and second, 3B Damien Lopez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. RF Michael Gray then hit a 2-run single down the right field line giving CSUDH a 13-3 cushion. RHP Matt Owens replaced Harris and got the first batter he faced to pop-up for the second out. However, his defense let him down when he got Jesus Hernandez to ground to shortstop for what appeared to be the third out of the inning. But SS Mike Roddy threw wide at second scoring a run. Owens then walked three consecutive batters to force home three runs before he struck out 1B Tony Marquez for the final out.

Cal State Dominguez Hills used six pitchers in the game. RHP Rick Moore tossed the first two hitless innings before giving way to Ramon Mata who allowed 3 runs on 4 hits. RHP Aldo Silva (3-1), who got the win, pitched two scoreless innings before RHP's Harry Trejo, Fernando Varela and Brian Cortes finished the game with an inning each.
