CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills pushed
across seven runs in the 7th inning to cruise to a 11-1 California
Collegiate Athletic Association win over crosstown rival Cal State
LA today at Toro Field. The victory broke CSUDH's four-game losing
streak while it extends CSLA's streak to 10 games.
Cal State LA (5-19, 2-7 CCAA) jumped out to an
early 1-0 lead in the first inning. With runners on first and
second, DH Jason Martini hit a single through the left side
scoring CF Mike Miller who had reached earlier on a single. CSUDH
tied it up in the second when 1B Danny Jacobs scored from third on
the first of five wild pitches on the day for the Golden Eagles.
The Toros (8-7-1, 3-6 CCAA) took the lead for
good with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings
before a 7-run outburst in the seventh inning. In that inning, Cal
State Dominguez Hills scored three times on wild pitches by the
Golden Eagles pitching. With runners on second and third an no
outs, SS Eric Pringle scored the first run on a Edwin Solano wild
pitch to make it 5-1. A walk later, RF Joe Gevas crossed the plate
on a wild pitch giving CSUDH a 6-1 lead. An out later and with CF
Jason Pruitt on third base, Solano threw his third wide pitch of
the inning scoring Pruitt making it 7-1.
After a walk to Jacobs, 3B Damien Lopez hit a
run-scoring double to center field. C Edgar Esqueda followed with
an RBI double of his own giving the Toros a 9-1 lead. RHP Kevin
Marchael replaced Solano and hit the next two batters he faced to
load the bases. Pinch hitter Jesus Hernandez then hit a 2-run
double to left field to account for the final score.
CSUDH had only two players with multiple hits.
Damien Lopez and LF Damon Felder each went 2-3 on the day with an
RBI. RHP Chris Ingstad (3-1) went the first 8 innings allowing one
run on 7 hits while striking out 7 batters.
Cal State LA was led by Mike Miller who went
3-4 on the day. RHP Chris Johnson (1-4) took the loss going the
first 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits. CSLA used a total of
six pitchers in the game, none pitching longer than an inning.
These same two teams will face-off again
tomorrow here at Toro Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
