CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills beat
Cal State LA 11-4 with the help of two big innings in California
Collegiate Athletic Association action today at Toro Field.
The Toros (9-7-1, 4-6 CCAA) plated five runs in
the second inning on 3 hits and 4 costly Golden Eagle errors. With
the score 1-0 and runners on second and third, LF Damon Felder hit
an infield single to make it 2-0. A walk and a wild pitch later,
CSUDH scored on an error by Cal State LA 3B Adam Nachreiner. RF
Joe Gevas plated another run on a sacrifice fly before DH Frank
Perez hit an infield single to make it 5-0.
CSLA (5-20, 2-8 CCAA) got three of the runs
back in the third on a leadoff triple by 2B Troy Young followed by
a RBI groundout by SS Danny Garcia. With runners on second and
third, Nachreiner doubled down the right field line to cut the
lead to 5-3.
CSUDH pushed across a single run in the third
inning to make it 6-3 before scoring five more in the fourth. With
runners on second and third, 3B Damien Lopez hit a single up the
middle to score a run. After RHP Andrew Wirmani relieved starter
Brandon Higelin, C Edgar Esqueda walked followed by a passed ball
to make it 8-3. A single by 2B David Keesee loaded the bases then
another CSLA error scored two runs before Damon Felder's RBI
single made it 11-3. The Golden Eagles pushed across a single run
in the top of the ninth to account for the final score.
Toros starter Rick Moore (2-1) earned the win
going the first 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 9 hits. RHP's Ramon
Mata and Brian Cortes pitched the final two innings. At the plate,
CSUDH was led by Felder going 2-4 with 2 RBI. Four other Toro
players had two hits a piece.
Cal State LA's Brandon Higelin (0-3) suffered
the loss going the first 3-1/3 innings allowing 9 runs on 9 hits
and 4 walks. Troy Young led the team offensively going 3-4 with an
RBI. CF Mike Miller also had two hits on the day.
Cal State Dominguez Hills travels to Tucson
this weekend to take on former Toros head coach Andy Lopez and his
Wildcats of the University of Arizona on Saturday and Sunday.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.
