Toros Take It to Number One Tritons in Softball
CSUDH sweeps UCSD in CCAA double-header

CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills upset the top-ranked Tritons today in a CCAA doubleheader. The Toros pulled out the 2-1 victory in game one, and posted the 3-0 shutout in game two. In the first game, CF Sasha Shell knocked in the winning run on a 2-out base hit to second base to propel CSUDH to the 2-1 win scoring RF Johana Orozco from second base. Orozco had reached earlier when she was hit by a pitch then stole second base to put herself in scoring position.

The Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning on a leadoff double by 3B Amy Mettee. She was sacrificed to third on a bunt by SS Kim Aggabao then scored on a groundout by 1B Leea Harlan.

CSUDH tied the score in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff walk by 2B Danielle Proctor. She was sacrificed to second by SS Danielle Stronks before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Proctor then scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1.

Tracy Barrientos (4-2) earned the win going the distance. In 7 innings she allowed 1 run on 7 hits while striking out three. Christi Martinelli (9-2) took the loss going 6-2/3 innings allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 4 hits. Martinelli walked 3 and struck out 6.

In the nightcap, the Toros struck quickly. In the second inning, Valerie Long led things off with a single to center. Long was advanced by sac bunt by Renee Synder. The hits continued as Noreen Spaulding singled to the shortstop as Long advanced to third. The it was Sasha Shell's turn. Shell nailed a double to left center, driving home Long and Spaulding.

In the bottom of the fifth, RoAnaLutz singled to left center and Danielle Stronks used her speed to beat the throw home, giving Lutz a RBI.

The Toros pitching staff and defense was strong throughout the game, earning the shutout. Senior pitcher Patrina Smith moved to 6-2 with the win and the Toros improved to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in the CCAA.
