CARSON,
Calif.-The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team closed a
chapter of baseball history playing their final game at Toro
Field. CSUDH did not disappoint the faithful with an 18-1 crushing
of CCAA rival Cal State San Bernardino today. The Toros scored 11
runs in the seventh to take control led by 1B Tony Marquez with 5
runs batted in on the day.
CF Joe Gevas registered the game-winning hit in
the third with a 2-run double to right field giving the Toros a
2-0 lead. The Coyotes trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the fourth on a
run-scoring double by LF Chris McAllen.
But CSUDH took a 7-1 lead with a 5-run sixth
highlighted by a bases loaded 3-run double by 3B Damien Lopez. C
Edgar Esqueda followed with a triple to right field making it 6-1.
Marquez closed out the scoring in the inning with a single up the
middle scoring Esqueda.
The Toros blew the game open in the seventh
sending 14 batter's to the plate and pushing across 11 runs. The
Toros first seven batters of the innings reached with on a hit,
highlighted by Marquez's first 2-run double of the inning.
CSUDH scored another run when LF Damon Felder
walked with the bases loaded followed by a wild pitch making it
11-1. DH Frank Perez knocked in a run on a single to left followed
by a sacrifice fly by Lopez. Marquez then hit his second double of
the inning scoring two more runs. 2B David Keesee topped it all
off with a 2-run double to right field.
On the day, CSUDH was led by Marquez going 4-4
with 5 RBI, including two doubles. 2B David Keesee went 3-3 at the
plate with 2 RBI and four other Toros players had 2 hits each. On
the mound, starting RHP Rick Moore (3-1) was impressive tossing
the complete game victory. Moore goes 9 innings allowing one run
on 6 hits, no walks and 6 strike outs.
San Bernardino's Matthew Rohr (1-4) took the
loss going the first 5 innings allowing 6 runs on 9 hits. Four
other hurler's pitched the final 3 innings for the Coyotes. At the
plate, CSUSB was led by McAllen with two hits.
Toro Field now gives way to progress and the
National Training Center which began construction last week. After
nearly 30 years, it is time to say goodbye. Cal State Dominguez
Hills will host their first "home" game at LA Southwest
College on March 22 against San Francisco State.
