Toros and 'Runners Split Softball Twinbill

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team earned a split with Cal State Bakersfield Saturday at the Roadrunnner Softball Complex. CSUB won game one 3-2 before CSDH came back to win game two 6-1.

Maigan Salamino (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a game winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, scoring Candace Pillado (Bakersfield, Calif.) who earlier reached on an error by Danielle Proctor.

The Toros (13-10 overall, 9-7 CCAA) struck first in the second inning. RoAna Lutz got her first of two first-pitch doubles to lead off the inning. A sacrifice fly by Janie Olivas moved her over to third for the pitcher Tracy Barrientos. Barrientos hit a single to pick up and RBI and give CSDH a 1-0 lead.

CSUB (21–10, 8-8) tied the game in the third. Lynn Kraftschik (Fremont, Calif.) led off with a single to left field. Allison Amezcua (Modesto, Calif.) executed the sac bunt moving Kraftschik into scoring position. Jenny Rios (Reedly, Calif.) picked up her 16 RBI of the season on a single to left to score Kraftschik.

After holding the Toros scoreless in the top of the fourth, CSUB added a run in the bottom of that inning. Tara Licuanan (Bellflower, Calif.) hit a leadoff single to left. Valerie Rodriguez (Bakersfield, Calif.) advanced Licuanan with a sac bunt. With one out, pitcher Erin Kelly (Mira Loma, Calif.) helped herself out with a RBI single to right field scoring Regina Ledesma (Bloomington, Calif.) who pinch ran for Licuanan.

The Toros answered with a run of their own in the fifth. Courtney Woltz led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. A Kelly pitch hit Janie Orozco and Sasha Shell hit a bunt single to load the bases. CSUB avoided one bullet getting Woltz out a home plate. Danielle Stonks hit a grounder to Pillado at shortstop allowing Orozco to score. Lutz struck out looking to end the inning with the game tied at 2-2.

With two out in the bottom of the seventh and runners on second and third base, Salamino hit a single to right field to end the game.

Game two was all Toros. With one out in the third, Orozco walked. Shell followed that with a slap-hit triple to right-center field to score Orozco. Danielle Stonks hit an RBI single to center to give CSDH a 2-0 lead.

Woltz reached on an error by Pillado to start the fourth inning. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Noreen Spaulding and Daisy Flores put Woltz on third. Orozco singled to score Woltz and put the Toros up 3-0.

The ‘Runners answered with one run in the fifth inning on back-to-back errors by the Toros. Salamino hit a deep single to center field. Shell misplayed the ball allowing Salamino to move to third. Stronks threw the ball away trying to catch Salamino at third allowing her to score.

The Toros put the final nail in the coffin in the top of the seventh. Flores opened the inning with a double. Orozco advanced her with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs and the bases loaded, Lutz ripped a triple to right-center picking up three RBI and putting the game out of reach for CSUB.
