San Francisco - San Francisco State split a
doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills at Brisbane Park,
today. After the Toros won the first game, 11-1, the Gators
recovered to win game two, 2-1.
Cal State Dominguez Hills used the long ball to
beat the Gators in game one. In the top of the first inning, Dani
Stronks and Ro Lutz hit back-to-back home runs to give the Toros a
2-0 lead. The Gators scored one run in the bottom of the first
when Rachel Darrow scored on a wild pitch.
Leading, 3-1, in the top of the fifth inning,
the Toros broke the game wide open as they scored eight runs to
take an 11-1 lead. The scoring was highlighted by a Daisy Flores'
grand slam. It was the Toro's third home run of the game to set a
school record. Toro pitcher Tracy Barrientos yielded one run on
four hits and struck out four to pick up her fifth win of the
season.
In game two, the Gators got all of their runs
in the first inning compliments of a two-run home run by Natalie
Batista. It was Batista's sixth home run of the season. The Toros
threatened in the top of the seventh inning as they scored one run
but left two runners on base when the Gators squeezed the final
out.
The story of the game was the performance of
SFSU pitcher Penny Fox. In pregame warm-ups, Fox was hit in the
eye by a batted ball. With her eye nearly swollen shut, the senior
hurler allowed only one run on seven hits to pick up her third win
of the season.
The Gators are now 9-28 overall and 3-17 in the
CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills is now 18-11 overall and 12-8 in
the conference.
