CARSON, Calif.-In the midst of the CCAA season,
the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros are picking a perfect time to
play solid softball. With a sweep of CS Stanislaus today, the
Toros have won five of their last six games. They are currently
ranked second in the CCAA and look to contend for a postseason
bid. The Toros kept that in mind today with 1-0, 4-1 wins over the
visiting Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus.
Game one started with CS Stanislaus looking to
make some noise. The Warriors got two of their three hits of the
game in the first inning. Pitcher Jamie Harkins drove one to the
pitcher, to be followed by a single to left field by Janelle
Hendrix. The Toros used strong pitching and solid defense to get
out of the inning without any damage on the scoreboard.
The game was quiet until the bottom of the
fifth inning, when junior catcher Daisy Flores led things off for
the Toros with a double to deep center. After Flores was
sacrificed to third, junior left fielder Courtney Woltz sliced the
ball up the center, driving home Flores for the RBI. That would be
all the scoring for both teams.
The pitching staffs of both squads were solid
allowing only three hits apiece. The Toros ace, senior Patrina
Smith moved to 10-3 on the season with the win.
The second game saw more hits and therefore,
more scoring. After only six combined hits in the first game, the
bats came alive in the second, especially for the Toros who
tallied eight of the game's 12 hits.
CS Dominguez Hills took charge in the second
inning. They tallied five hits and off those hits, drove in three
runs. Daisy Flores who had a double in game one, started the
hitting off with a single through the right side, followed by
Tracy Barrientos who singled to third base, advancing Flores to
second.
The fire continued as Woltz got another hit on
the day, nailing a line drive up the left side. Then it was Megan
Barranco's turn for some RBI. The junior singled through the right
side to drive home Flores. Woltz advanced to third but used an
error by the Warriors to take home. Senior CF Sasha Shell would
wrap the inning up with a hit that would bring Barrientos in for
the 3-0 lead.
The Warriors would answer in the fourth inning,
when Nikki Moore would pressure with a double to left center. CSUS
would then take advantage of a Toros error to bring in a run. The
Toros would score again in the bottom of the fourth, with the
hottest player of the day, Daisy Flores getting her third hit and
second double of the day. She drove one into center for two bases.
With Barrientos advancing Flores to third on a sacrifice, Courtney
Woltz was in a familiar position as she drilled one up the left
field line to bring in Flores and add an RBI to her stats.
The game would end with a 4-1 win for the
Toros, who improved to 20-11 on the season and 14-8 in CCAA play.
Junior pitcher Tracy Barrientos, allowed only
four hits and earned the win for CSUDH. She is now 6-2 on the
season.
