Broncos Draw First Blood, Take Game One of Baseball Series over Toros, 6-3
Cal Poly Pomona slams two home runs in 6-3 CCAA conference victory

LOS ANGELES, Calif.-Cal Poly Pomona takes the first game of this four-game series over the Toros with a 6-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory today at Dennis Gilbert Field on the campus of LA Southwest College.

The Broncos (16-14-1, 9-12 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI singles by CF Brian Ziarnick and RF Matt Stevens. CSUDH tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on a fielder's choice groundout with the bases loaded by 2B David Keesee. The double-play relay by Pomona second baseman Benny Winslow was wide at first allowing Toros CF Mike Milstead to score from second to tie the game.

Cal Poly took the lead for good in the fifth on a solo home run by C Gregor Connors to left field making it 3-2. The Broncos added another solo homer in the sixth inning by Winslow to give them a 4-2 lead.

CPP then plated two insurance runs in the top of the eighth on a 2-run single with the bases loaded by Ziarnick. Cal State Dominguez Hills (20-13-1, 11-8 CCAA) would get a run back in the bottom of the stanza on a sacrifice fly by 3B Damien Lopez but that was as close as the Toros would get.

Ziarnick led Cal Poly with 3 RBI going 2-4 at the plate. Connors and Winslow each hit homer's to contribute to the 13-hit Bronco attack. Starting RHP Tony Ortiz (4-4) pitched a strong game going the distance. He tosses 9 innings allowing only 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits while striking out 4.

Mike Milstead led the Toros at the plate with 2 hits. Starting RHP Chris Ingstad (5-3) suffered the loss going 8 innings allowing 6 runs on 13 hits.

Both of these teams will face off again tomorrow. The start time has been moved up from a 2:30 p.m. first pitch to a 1:00 start.
