Toros Split CCAA Baseball Doubleheader with Cal State Stanislaus
Cal State Dominguez Hills wins first game 8-3 then drop nightcap 5-4

LOS ANGELES, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills won the first game of today's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader 8-3 but faltered in the nightcap losing 5-4 to Cal State Stanislaus today at Dennis Gilbert Field on the campus of LA Southwest College.

In the first game, CSUDH (22-18-1, 13-13 CCAA) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by LF Damon Felder. But Cal State Stanislaus tied it with a run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by 3B Buck Simmons scoring RF Sean Findlay who had reached earlier on a double.

The Toros took the lead for good in the bottom of the stanza on a leadoff triple by C Edgar Esqueda followed by a RBI groundout by DH Frank Perez making it 2-1. CSUDH scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings' on a run-scoring groundout by CF Mike Milstead and a solo home run by 3B Tony Marquez. Marquez's second homer of the season turned out to be the game-winning hit.

CSUS (14-22, 7-15 CCAA) trimmed the deficit to 4-3 with 2 runs in the seventh inning on Buck Simmons 2-run home run. But the Toros answered back with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, all coming after two outs. Esqueda hit a double followed by Perez's RBI single for the first run of the inning. CSUDH also got RBI single's from Tony Marquez, 1B Danny Jacobs and Damon Felder to account for the final margin of victory.

Esqueda, who had two triples and a double, and Marquez led the Toros with 3 hits a piece. Starting RHP Rick Moore (4-3) earned the win tossing 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out 5 batters. LHP Steve Ressa notched his third save of the season pitching the final 3 scoreless innings allowing only 1 hit.

For the Warriors, DH Hector Alaniz and 1B Justin Reyes led the team with 2 hits each. LHP Eric Fagan (4-4) took the loss going the first 6-2/3 innings allowing all 8 runs on 13 hits.

In the nightcap, CSUDH was up 4-0, but Cal State Stanislaus scored 5 unanswered runs to go on for the 5-4 win. Cal State Dominguez Hills scored single runs in the first and second innings on a fielder's choice RBI by Marquez and a groundout RBI by Danny Jacobs scoring LF Mike Roux who had reached earlier on a leadoff triple.

CSUDH took a 4-0 lead with 2 runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Marquez and an infield single by Steve Ressa. However, the Warriors battled back making it 4-2 in the fifth inning on RBI single's by 2B Jarrett DeVault and LF Kyle Sleeth.

CSUS took the lead for good with 3 runs in the sixth. Sean Findlay led off the inning with a pinch-hit solo home run to get things started. SS Kyle Dennis also had an RBI double followed by a run-scoring fielder's choice by DeVault making it 5-4. That is where it would stay as Warrior RHP Scott Taylor (2-3) made it stand up going the distance tossing 7 innings allowing 4 runs on 10 hits.

Mike Roux led the Toros in the loss with 3 hits. Starting RHP Don Bracken (2-4) suffered the loss going the first 4-1/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits. Steve Ressa allowed 3 runs on 2 hits in just one inning of work while RHP Brian Cortes pitched the final 1-2/3 hitless innings.

These two teams will complete the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 noon.
