LOS ANGELES, Calif.-Tony Marquez hit a leadoff
walk-off home run in the nightcap of today's doubleheader giving
Cal State Dominguez Hills a dramatic 6-5 comeback victory over Cal
State Stanislaus. The Toros held on in the early game to defeat
the Warriors 6-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association
doubleheader action today at Dennis Gilbert Field on the campus of
LA Southwest College.
Down 1-0 in the first inning of the early game,
CSUDH (24-18-1, 15-13 CCAA) pushed across 3 runs in the bottom of
the first on consecutive infield singles with the bases loaded by
LF Mike Roux and 2B David Keesee followed by a wild pitch with the
bases loaded to take a 3-1 lead.
Cal State Stanislaus (14-24, 7-17 CCAA) made it
3-2 in the third on a groundout to the right side of the field
scoring CF James Savala who had reached on a triple. But the Toros
quickly answered in the bottom of the stanza on Marquez's first
home run of the day, a 2-run shot to left field giving CSUDH a 5-2
lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills tacked on an
insurance run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by CF Mike
Milstead. The Warriors would score single runs in the fifth and
ninth innings on an RBI groundout by 2B Jarrett DeVault and an RBI
single by pinch-hitter Ian Corso to account for the final margin
of 6-4.
Marquez led the Toros going 3-4 with 2 RBI. C
Edgar Esqueda and 1B Danny Jacobs each added 2 hits each. Starting
RHP Aldo Silva (7-3) earned the win going the first 8 innings
allowing 3 runs on 9 hits while striking out 6 batters. Silva's 7
wins are the most by a CSUDH pitcher since Paul Gutierrez won 9
games in 1996. Closer Brian Cortes came on in the ninth to earn
his fifth save of the season.
James Savala led the Warriors with 3 hits while
RF Sean Findlay and C Paul Cardelli added 2 hits a piece. RHP
Andrew Barrett (4-5) took the loss going the distance allowing 6
runs, 5 earned, on 10 hits in 8 innings.
In the nightcap, Stanislaus took a 1-0 lead in
the third on an RBI single by DH Hector Alaniz. The Warriors took
a 5-0 lead with 4 runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by SS Kyle
Dennis followed one out later by a 3-run home run by LF Kyle
Sleeth.
But the Toros would answer with 5 runs in the
bottom of the inning on an RBI double by RF Jose Montes and a
bases loaded walk by LF Damon Felder. Edqar Esqueda then cleared
the bases with a 3-run double to tie the game 5-5 to set up Tony
Marquez's heroics in the bottom of the seventh inning. Warrior
pitching had a difficult time retiring Tony Marquez this weekend
who hit .533 (8-15) in the four-game series with 3 HR and 7 RBI.
LHP Steve Ressa (2-2) earned the win in relief.
He replaced starter Chris Ingstad in the top of the seventh with
runners on second and third. Ressa induced a groundout to
shortstop to retire the side. Ingstad pitched 6-2/3 innings
allowing 5 runs on 9 hits while striking out 8 batters.
RHP Justin Hoppes (1-3) suffered the loss in
relief going 1 inning allowing 1 run on 1 hit. Starting LHP Justin
Schwitters went the first 5 innings allowing 5 runs, only 1
earned, on 4 hits but walked 7 Toro batters.
The Toros are in non-conference action on
Monday, April 8 hosting Hawaii-Pacific University at 2:30 p.m.
