Toros Settle for Split in CCAA Doubleheader Against UC Davis
Joe Gevas' school record 6 hits in first game fuel 20-9 rout, UC Davis salvages split with 6-2 win in nightcap

LOS ANGELES, Calif.-Toros LF Joe Gevas set a school record with 6 hits, including 2 home runs, in a 20-9 rout over UC Davis in the first game of a California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball twinbill today at Dennis Gilbert Field on the campus of LA Southwest College. UC Davis came back in the nightcap to salvage a split with a 6-2 win behind a strong pitching performance from Greg Bruso.

In the first game, UC Davis scored 4 unearned runs in the second on 2 hits and an error. With runners on first and third, RF Ian Fishburn hit an RBI single making it 1-0. An out later, CF Robby Tulk blasted a 3-run homer over the right center field wall giving the Aggies a 4-0 lead.

CSUDH got a run back in the third on a throwing error with a runner on third base by UCD's shortstop Ryan Coultas making it 4-1. The Toros would plate another single run in the fourth on on an RBI single by RF Jose Montes to trim the Aggies lead to 4-2. Cal State Dominguez Hills then took a 7-4 lead in the fifth pushing across 5 runs on 5 hits including three consecutive RBI doubles by Gevas, C Edgar Esqueda and 2B Tony Marquez. A batter later, 3B Damien Lopez blasted his seventh home run of the season, a 2-run shot over the right center field wall, for a 7-4 lead.

After Davis got a run back in the sixth on a leadoff home run by 1B Dennis Flippen, the Toros sent 13 batters to the plate while scoring 12 runs to take a commanding 19-5 lead. In the inning, CSUDH hit 3 home runs including three-run shots from both Marquez and Gevas. SS Eric Pringle also chimed in hitting his first collegiate homer, a 2-run blast.

The Aggies scored another run in the seventh on a Flippen RBI single then plated 3 runs in the eighth on Ryan Coultas' 3-run homer to make it 19-9. But the Toros would add on another run in the bottom of the inning on Gevas' second home run of the game, a monster shot over the right field wall to account for all the scoring in the game.

Gevas led CSUDH going 6-6 with 5 RBI and 5 runs scored. His 6 hits broke the Toros all-time record of 5 hits in a game. Damien Lopez went a perfect 4-4 with 2 RBI while Tony Marquez had 3 hits and 4 RBI. Starting RHP Aldo Silva (8-3) earned the win tossing the first 7-1/3 innings allowing 9 runs, only 4 earned, on 12 hits. RHP Harry Trejo came on to pitch the final 1+ innings.

Starting RHP Julio Marquez (2-5) suffered the loss for the Aggies going the first 5-1/3 innings. Marquez allowed 9 runs on 13 hits. RHP Michael Schofield came on in relief in the sixth and failed to record an out. He allowed 6 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. LHP Andy Brutlag pitched the final 2-2/3 innings allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. Flippen led UCD at the plate with 3 hits including his 10th home run of the season.

In the nightcap, Aggie starting RHP Greg Bruso was dominating striking out 11 Toro batters in a 7-inning complete game gem. Bruso allowed only 2 unearned runs on 6 hits. UC Davis (20-21, 15-12 CCAA) took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by 2B Mark Wells. But CSUDH (29-19-1, 17-14 CCAA) came back in the bottom of the inning to take their only lead 2-1 on a fielding error and a wild pitch. Davis answered with 2 runs in the second on an RBI double by C Cody Noghera and a wild pitch making it 3-1.

UCD would tack on another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Ryan Coultas then 2 more runs in the seventh on a 2-out double by Mark Wells followed by a single and a 3-base error by Toros CF Mike Milstead to account for the final 6-2 score.

LF Shaun McCullough led the Aggies going 3-4 while three other players had 2 hits each. Edgar Esqueda led CSUDH going 2-3 at the plate. RHP Rick Moore (4-4) suffered the loss going 5-1/3 allowing 4 runs on 8 hits.

This series will conclude tomorrow with a single game beginning at noon.
