CARSON, Calif.- It was a battle.. A battle
between two teams , one trying to stay at the top of the CCAA
standings, one trying to move up in the standings.
It was a battle of teams that swept their
opponents in action yesterday. CS Dominguez Hills and UC Davis
faced off in CCAA action today, in a battle of two of the top
teams in the conference. The Toros swept Chico State yesterday, as
the Aggies were doing the same to CS Bakersfield.
Saturday they faced off in the much anticipated
double header. In game one, it was the Aggies who struck first. In
the top of the third, they began their scoring drive off three
consecutive singles. With bases loaded, Aggie Shymala White
reached first on a fielders choice that brought in a UCD run.
The Aggies would threaten again in the top of
the fourth, with runners in scoring position due to Toros errors.
But senior hurler Patrina Smith was able to throw some smart
pitches to retire the inning.
CSUDH would try to answer, but strong pitching
and a solid infield kept the Toros hits numbered. The Toros were
only able to get four hits in the game, compared to the six put on
the board by the Aggies. The final was a shutout for UCD, 1-0.
Amy Rosson threw for the UCD win. She is now
19-2 on the season. Patrina Smith was charged the loss. She is now
12-8 this year.
The second game opened in much the same manner.
The Aggies threatened many times in the opening innings, including
a bases loaded situation. But the Toros defense and freshman
pitcher Valerie Long, who was a perfect 5-0 going into today's
game, was able to end the UCD scoring hopes.
The first five innings were a battle of defense
and pitching, with very few hits and most of the innings going
three and out. In the top of the sixth, the Aggies put together
what appeared to be their best scoring opportunity of the day
after two solid singles. But Val Long stayed strong to get the
Toros out of the inning. At the end of seven, it was still tied at
a tense 0-0.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth,
Daisy Flores was up for the Toros. The catcher nailed a single up
the center for the game winning run. The Toros pulled out the 1-0
win They are now 27-16 on the season. Val Long is now a perfect
6-0.
