Toros' Baseball Team Uses Long Ball to Defeat Cal Lutheran
Danny Jacobs and Frank Perez each hit home runs to fuel CSUDH win

LOS ANGELES, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills got home runs from Danny Jacobs and Frank Perez fueling a 7-3 non-conference win over visiting Cal Lutheran University today at Dennis Gilbert Field on the campus of LA Southwest College.

Cal Lutheran (24-8) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on a leadoff triple by 2B Luke Stajcar followed by an RBI single from LF Steve Maitland. But CSUDH (30-20-1) took the lead in the bottom of the stanza with 2 runs on a two-out RBI double from 2B Tony Marquez followed by an RBI double from DH Frank Perez making it 2-1.

The Toros plated another run in the second on 1B Danny Jacobs fifth home run of the season, a solo blast over the right field wall making it 3-1. Cal State Dominguez Hills then tacked on 2 more runs in the third on Perez's second home run of the season, a 2-run shot to center field giving CSUDH a 5-1 lead.

The Kingsmen pushed across 2 runs in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 5-3 on an RBI single from Stajcar followed by a sacrifice fly from Maitland. But the Toros would score 2 more insurance runs in the seventh on a run-scoring single from LF Joe Gevas and a sacrifice fly by Marquez to go on for the 7-3 win.

RHP Fernando Varela (1-0) earned his first collegiate win tossing 2 innings in relief allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 2 hits. Perez led the squad at the plate going 3-4 with 3 RBI and a run. Gevas also had 2 hits on the day.

For Cal Lutheran, RHP Jason Hirsh (7-2) suffered only his second loss of the season. He went the first inning allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. Stajcar led the Kingsmen at the plate going 2-4 with an RBI.

CSUDH now travels to Wine Country for a crucial 4-game CCAA series against Sonoma State University. Friday and Saturday are both doubleheader's beginning at noon.
