SSU Takes Another Baseball Pair from Toros
April 20, 2002

Complete Box Score - Game 1

Complete Box Score - Game 2

(Rohnert Park) -- Ryan Souza's two out single in the fifth inning, drove home Frank Wasilewski with the eventual winning run as the Sonoma State Cossacks (38-19, 17-15) defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills (30-24-1, 17-19) 2-1 in the second game of a CCAA doubleheader played Saturday.

The victory, coupled with the Cossacks 5-2 win in the opener, gave the Cossacks a sweep of the four game series and put SSU back into the hunt for a CCAA postseason spot.

Souza was the hero of the second game for the Cossacks as he collected three of the team's four hits and drove home both runs.

Toro starter Rick Moore had a solid effort, allowing just the four hits while walking one and striking out four. But SSU's Tim Worthington was just a notch better in earning his eighth victory in 10 decisions. Worthington also tossed a complete game four hitter, did not walk a batter and struck out five.

The Cossacks enjoyed a couple of outstanding defensive gems in the field during the four game set with the Toros. Keian Davis made a spectacular diving catch into the centerfield fence to end yesterday's first game, and today it was Rob Garibaldi making a diving catch in centerfield that ended a Toro threat in the sixth inning of game one.

In that game, the Cossacks trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but plated three in the second as Brandon Burgess and Gil Barry each had run-scoring hits.

The Toros trimmed it to 3-2 with a run in the fifth, but Josh Bell, working in relief of starter Bo Jacobson left the potential tying run stranded at third.

Bell picked up the victory in relief with Scott Griggs coming on to throw three innings of hitless relief to earn his third save of the season.

The Toros are at Chico State for a weekend series beginning next Friday.
