UC San Diego got significant contributions from
all four of its seniors in sweeping second-place Cal State
Dominguez Hills in a CCAA doubleheader on Senior Day at Triton
Softball Field Saturday, 2-0 and 7-1.
In the first game, Leea Harlan, UCSD's all-time
leader in wins and strikeouts, threw a one-hit shutout, allowing
just one walk while striking out five Toro batters in earning her
10th win against 13 losses. Sophomore third baseman Amy Mettee
provided three hits, including a double. The Tritons scored both
their runs in the third inning with Anderson hitting a single to
drive in Mettee before Hayes hit a ground-rule double to plate
Anderson.
For the Toros, starter Tracy Barrientos (7-4)
took the loss.
The lone hit for the visitors came from senior
third baseman RoAna Lutz, who led off the fifth inning with a
double to left field.
The Triton seniors again took center stage in
the nightcap, as Martinelli threw a five-hit complete game, giving
up just one unearned run and two walks while striking out seven.
Martinelli (14-7) also made her mark at the plate, hitting her
first career home run. The two-run blast was part of a four-run
first inning for UCSD. Mettee, Kim Aggabao and Kristin Hunstad
finished with two hits apiece for the home side while Hayes drove
in two more runs with a single in the first and a sacrifice fly in
the fifth inning to close out the scoring.
Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Valerie Long
was pinned with her first loss of the season, dropping to 7-1.
Lutz and Sasha Shell had two hits apiece, with
Shell hitting a triple in the fifth and coming around to score the
only Toro run of the game on a Triton error.
With the sweep, UC San Diego improves to 27-20
overall, 16-12 in the CCAA, as it makes a final post-season push.
Cal State Dominguez Hills falls to 29-18 overall, 19-11 in CCAA
play.
The Toros now prepare for the Cal State
Bakersfield Mt. Dew Classic tourney, which will have an impact on
subsequent regional rankings. |
