The Chico State baseball team, currently ranked
No. 4 in the country, opened a four-game series with Cal State
Dominguez Hills with a 7-1 victory in front of the largest crowd
at Nettleton Stadium this season.
A crowd of 1,483 saw Adam Montarbo (W 8-2)
throw his second complete game of the year, striking out a
season-high 10 batters, and giving up six hits. Montarbo retired
the Toros in order four times, striking out the side in the sixth.
Chico State (41-7, 16-7 CCAA) started the
scoring early with a two-out rally in the first inning. John
Moylan and Ryan Tash singled, and Brad Walski drove in Moylan with
a RBI single to run his hitting streak to five games. Steve Newsom
walked to load the bases and a wild pitch brought home another run
for the 'Cats. Ryan Wulfert walked to again load the bases and
that was it for starter Chris Ingstad (L 7-5), who left the game
with a sore hand after deflecting an earlier hit.
Rick Moore came on in relief and gave up a
two-run hit to Kurt Probasco for a 4-0 Wildcat lead after one
inning. Moore completed the game, giving up three runs on 11 hits
and striking out three.
The 'Cats scored an unearned run in the fifth,
as the leadoff batter Jeff Walker reached base on an error by the
pitcher and came around to score on a RBI-single off the bat of
Newsom.
Dominguez Hills' (30-25-1, 17-20 CCAA) only run
came on a homer by Damien Lopez, his eighth of the season, to lead
off the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Newsom drove in
pinch runner Chris Henry with his eighth double of the year and
his second RBI of the night. He later came around to score his
second run of the night on a wild pitch.
