Toros Cruise to 22-7 Non-Conference Victory over Biola
Eric Pringle and Edgar Esqueda lead 26-hit attack with 4 hits each

LOS ANGELES, Calif.-Eric Pringle and Edgar Esqueda led a 26-hit attack with 4 hits each as Cal State Dominguez Hills rolled to a 22-7 non-conference win over visiting Biola University today at Dennis Gilbert Field on the campus of LA Southwest College.

CSUDH (31-28-1) broke an 8-game losing streak in the victory and broke a single game team record with 9 doubles in the game, 3 alone by 2B Jesus Hernandez which tied the all-time individual record. The run total marked the third time this year the Toros have broken the 20-run barrier.

Cal State Dominguez Hills jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by 1B Tony Marquez. But Biola answered with 3 runs in the second inning on a 2-run triple by SS Sal Poti and a groundout RBI from RF Adam Shaeffer making it 3-1.

Biola (23-22-1) plated another run in the third on a leadoff home run by 2B Sam Orr. CSUDH trimmed the lead to 4-2 with a run in the fourth on Pringle's first hit of the game, an RBI single to right field. But the Eagles answered back with 2 runs in the fifth inning on 1B Carl Galloway's 2-run home run over the right field wall giving Biola a 6-2 advantage.

The Toros began the fireworks in the bottom of the stanza pushing across 6 runs on 7 hits while sending 11 batters to the plate. Marquez knocked in the first run on a double followed by DH Frank Perez' 2-run single. Esqueda then hit an RBI double to make it tie the game 6-6. CF Mike Milstead gave the Toros the lead for good on a run scoring groundout followed by an RBI single by Pringle giving CSUDH an 8-6 lead.

CSUDH plated 6 more runs in the sixth on 4 hits. The big blow came on a two-run single from Milstead and a 2-run double by Marquez making it 14-6. The Toros scored 2 more runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Esqueda and a groundout by LF Jason Pruitt to blow the game wide open 16-6.

Cal State Dominguez Hills added insult to injury with 6 more runs in the eighth inning sending 11 more batters to the plate. This time the big blow came off a pinch-hit 3-run homer from Frankie Valle, his first of the season.

Esqueda was perfect at the plate going 4-4 with 3 RBI and 5 runs scored. Pringle also had 4 hits going 4-6 at the plate with 3 RBI. Tony Marquez led the squad with 4 RBI going 3-4 with 2 doubles. Every Toros starter had at least one hit on the day.

Starting RHP Aldo Silva (9-5) earned the win going the first 5 innings allowing 6 runs on 8 hits. Jose Montes, Brad Allen and Harry Trejo came out of the bullpen and combined to allow only 2 hits over the final 4 innings.

For Biola, Carl Galloway led the team with 3 hits including a 2-run home run. Sal Poti also had multiple hits going 2-4 at the plate with 2 RBI. LHP Gary Gallegos (2-4) suffered his second loss of the season to the Toros. Gallegos went the first 4-2/3 innings allowing 8 runs on 11 hits.

The Toros will close out the 2002 campaign with another non-conference game on Thursday, May 2 at Concordia University in Irvine. First pitch is set for 3 PM.
